Does anyone definitely know what the chirp noise is when starting from a stop after removing the spring plate? |

I can't comment on the spring plate, but there are two tuber issues that might be related to that kind of description. 1) The torque spec for the crank nut is wrong in the manual, and if you follow it, there is a good chance the stator bell will come loose. It will "ring" at idle when it is coming loose, and go away when you even barely load the clutch in gear (like enough to drop idle but not move bike). You don't want to go long like this, it is chewing up those splines could destroy your crank. 2) If your 5th gear drive assembly roller bearings have grenaded, you will gets some really odd chirping under odd circumstances. Like in gear, out of gear, clutch in, clutch out, etc. So, not a perfect fit for your description, but useful if the symptoms evolve. |

I know the crank nut is correct as I recently checked torque when removing spring plate. Chirp noise only started after spring plate removal. Drive bearing looks good having removed drive pulley and replacing seal. chirp only from start without gently slipping clutch. I appreciate all info on what to check to keep these bikes trouble free. |

I had the same symptom on my S2T. Here is probably why you are "chirping" at the rolling start and rolling stop, but not while rolling along above several mph. Your front pulley is probably wobbling. The front pulley splines are "sacrificial", so they will be destroyed instead of the final drive splines. Go to you HD dealeer and get a new pulley, new detent plate, new screws. Then follow the Field Service manual to a T. Best wishes. |
