SO you're saying it's "popping"?....I have the D&D, race ecm, K&N air filter, and XB12 airbox and it "pops" a little when I let of the gas. I do have to say that it doesn't do it as much as it did when I had the Buell race pipe on!

Popping? as in making that distinctive Harley with an after market screamin eagle type straight pipe sound? The D&D is going to do that. Does it a little on every D&D I've heard on a Buell. Finally saw and HEARD a Jardine today. Not bad looking or sounding (closer to theD&D... pops too). I think I still like the sound of the Drummer... lower growl and a little more subtle. If you just want that harley-popping-loadassed roar-right from the getgo, the Jardine sounds just as good as the D&D for less.

Its unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust. Meaning when you chop the throttle your going from WFO to STFD but the ECM is still pumping fuel as if its WFO. Try rolling the throttle off instead of just chopping it.

im more interested in finding out WHAT ECM TO BUY
i do roll the throttle n its still backfires n pops its really annoying n its already 200miles overdue for 2500 mile service
i need to get this ecm thing figured out soon so i dont end up with burnt valves or pistons
and o ya is this condition considered LEAN or RICH?

Popping in the exhaust is usually described as rich... popping in the intake side is lean...
normally. When you close the throttle there is extra fuel present, that's what Wyckedflesh was trying to 'splain to ya

Get whichever ECM is the current part # at the time. If there is something horribly wrong with it chances are Buell will replace it for you.

Also on the backfiring issue alot of these aftermarket mufflers have that. Even when I had the race kit on mine it would do it every once in a while. Also with the air cleaner/pipe combo you really should have some kind of reprogrammed ECM. Yes it is gonna run real funny until you get one.

Popping when you shut the throttle down doesn't necessarily mean rich or lean. It just means that the airflow is pullign raw fuel into the exhaust when the throttle gets closed. This can happen on both rich or lean bikes.

As to your ECM question its hard to say, it can be as simple as a parts number change to mate with the '04's or it could mean its got a different map. Since the mothership is so fond of just simply changing the numbers, my GUESS would be they are the same pieces with a different part number.

What is happening is you've created a lean mixture on the bike. It is getting more air but not more fuel. That is what the race ecm does it tells the injectors to deliver more fuel. You can probably run like this for a while, but eventually you are going to burn the pistons up. This is not a pretty sight. My brother ran his S3 lean for a long time and eventually burnt a hole in the top of his piston. He had run like this for a few thousand miles though.

I have installed the race ECM in addition to the D&D, K&N filter, and XB12 airbox. My bike pops and "backfires" when I decelerate.

This combination has been not only put on a dyno, but I've measured the air to fuel ratio as well. The worst case lean condition is at 4700 RPM with an air to fuel ratio of 13.8. It is *definitely* not lean.

I don't have my race ecm yet, but mine pops sometimes with the Drummer on. My M2 did the same thing and never burnt up anything in 20,000 miles.

If you are that worried, do like Skully says and measure the air/fuel ratio.

the loud popping sound you are describing is very simply the normal sound of a 4 stroke with straight pipes. the solution to this problem was pretty well figured out around 95 years ago. the generic term for the device is called "MUFFLER". there is really no rich or lean about the closed throttle deceleration mode. you get the same minimum fuel as you would at idle, just that the engine is turning at a greater speed. stoichiometric fuel/air mixture is a completely useless concept at closed throttle deceleration, it is not the force of fuel combustion driving the crankshaft, but rather the momentum of the vehicle, operating via traction of the rear tire, and coupled through the transmission and clutch which is turning the engine, which acts as a throttled air compressor, the resultant sounds of which you can clearly hear without the muting effects of the muffler which you carefully removed from your bike. is that simple enough for ya?

Go easy with the finger punk.

FP said exactly the same thing that has ALREADY been said and you were obviously not up to the task of processing it the way it was stated.

The LAST thing we want around here is you and Dyna sparring like school kids like you do everywhere else. Have some respect.

I understand that it takes all kinds 420... But why would you want to alienate yourself from a group that's already alienated from whatever other groups we could theoretically fit into?

I assure you... You don't want to get kicked off of THIS board. One of these days you'll need our help and/or good will.

420 to answer your question. I believe there is only one for XB9 and one for XB12. The XB9 race ECM had a real early supercede. Chances are if you buy one now it will be the new #. It was superceded like a year ago.

Lee re-jetting a carb bike is basically the same thing as doing the race ECM on a FI bike. Unless you purposely jetted the M2 lean. Than my whole point flies out the door.
