I figure I will take one more shot at this.... I have a 2K X1 and have been having a clutch problem for about 2 years. I kind of gave up on it and have let her sit.... Symptoms: - Grinding noise (not the proverbial "Clunk") when shifting into first from neutral. - Surging (bike leaps forward) when shifting - Stalling (Sometimes the bike stalls - I need to goose the throttle to keep it from stalling) - You can hear a slight "tap-tap-tao" when spinning the rear wheel on a center stand in N Corrective actions: - Adjusted clutch cable about 100 times per the manual (this is NOT a new procedure for me) - Replaced ALL clutch basket disks including the spring-plate delete mod - changed primary oil to HD spec (Was running Mobil-1) I have searched the interwebs far and wide on this issue and the only thing I have turned up are about 3-4 Sportster XL people with the same issue. They all ended with the same result.... The people on the forum thought the dude was crazy and there was never a resolution. Anyway, I am going to give it one more shot here and probably remove the basket and take a look at the dogs. If anyone has any other ideas, they are welcome. |

Given what you have checked, the problem is most likely not a clutch issue. Sounds like the shift forks are not quite 'indexing' where they should. Time to check the shift drum, and pay special attention to the detent plate, the C clip that holds the detent plate on, and see if the pins in the end of the shift drum (the ones the shift pawl engages) are as they should be. Check the pawl alignment per the instructions in sec 6.13 of the shop manual. Hope this helps, Dave |

Yes, another thing to check. I believe the tap-tap you hear is the engagement dogs of one gear brushing against the dogs of the gear next to it, instead of clearing as they should if the gears were properly spaced apart by the shift forks. The 5th gear bearing is easy to check. Loosen the drive belt, then turn the engine pulley by hand. A bad bearing will have a crunchy sound and feel, yet you still will/should feel the dogs brushing by each other. Hope this helps, Dave |
