Is lubing the actuator cable a no brainer procedure? and how is operation tested..Thx.. |

Yea, throttle cable aerosol lube applied at the top works well. The only complication is the adjuster in the middle, so a lot of the lube leaks out there rather than going to the bottom 2/3 of the cable where you need it. You can test operation as follows: with the outer air box removed so you can see the actuator- flip the kill switch to "off", turn the ignition to "on" (do NOT start the bike), rotate the throttle grip to wide open, while watching the actuator, flip the kill switch to "run". The actuator should rotate to the full open position, pause, then rotate back to the full closed position. If it hesitates, skips, or doesn't move at all, you have a bad actuator . The older actuators have plastic gears that fail after some time. Newer actuators have metal gears that (hopefully) last much longer. |

You could probably take the cable off at the top end, unscrew the adjuster all the way until it comes apart and add more lube there. |

Or pull both ends off and lube from each end. I use dri-slide - it has a needle applicator, not aerosol. |

Its always recommended to have both ends free to free-hand-test the movement of the cables anyway...throttle, clutch, or exhaust. |

And never EVEEEEEEEER try to rotate the actuator with you hand. It will bust the gears of the early types, with the plastic gears, and will not do the later version much good either. |

Mine is working fine,,just want to to Preventive Maintenance I see others have had failures and then just wire the actuator open and call it good |

That adjuster will come apart far enough to lube the lower easily. Remove the upper from the actuator. If you look closely at the lower end of the adjuster you'll see it is split. You can spread that open carefully (I use snap ring pliers) and it will un-snap and you can pull the upper half all the way to the end of the cable and can now put your lube clamp at the top of the lower. It just snaps back together. Be ready for a smoking muffler!! And ++11 on never turning the actuator by hand. I found it easier to just remove the 3 actuator fasteners and camming the whole actuator off the cable instead of vice-versa. |
