curious bout something every now and then when I go to start the bike the starter does some serious grinding/metal banging--ie doesnt engage the flywheel just bangs into it like the teeth arent meshing. 2nd time i try to start it engages nicely. most of the time it happens if i roll the bike even a slight amount foreward or back after I shut down. PS-Its now too cold to ride and Im really "cranky" cause of the stupid cold and not being able to ride!!! |

Could be the beginning of the overrun clutch going bad, or not. It's just that mine was behaving the same way before things got worse until it finally gave up. Time will tell, springtime that is. |

Jetranger,my 08 Uly has started doing the same thing. It's intermittent. Do a search on buell ulysses starter noise and you'll get quite a few good threads to read.I'm going to wait till next spring to sort it out.Keep me posted if you find anything conclusive. My 06 Uly never did this. |

My 2008 was starting to be jerky like that too. It was just a loose battery terminal(Again!). My 2008 has always cranked slowly though. I think my starter is just wussy. I would have thought if it was actually going to crap out for real, it would have done so by now. (47,000 miles or so) |

Good point Nate, mine did crap out at 20K. And I do mean crap out, starter motor eventually would just spin and not engage the ring gear. Kind of had to fix it then, no choice. |
