I have a stock 07 XB9SX with about 18K miles on it. It started to make a rod knock and I took the motor apart and found the rear rod fork bearing was going out. It has a lot of play in it. The local Harley shop said it can't be fixed and I have to buy a new one for around 700 dollars. I looked up Darkhorse Crankworks and saw that they can be remanufactured. I couldn't tell what they charged to have this done. What is the better option?

I know that XB12 crank failures are being logged and i believe my 05 XB9 was also logged under a separate category.

It would be useful to log others as well, out of interest , as it's said that XB9 crank failures are rare.

Interestingly there was another failure in East London RSA but don't have any details.

In my opinion a Dark Horse rebuild would be money well spent over a second hand crank, no matter what mileage it has on it.

I talked to Dark Horse today and they said my crank is probably junk. I leaning towards a new one. I called a buell dealer and they said the assembly part # is 24213-02A. Can anyone confirm this? Also, I am looking the part number for both crank roller bearings. I'm trying to find the best deal on internet.

Did they say why it was "probably junk"?

I would.ve thought as long as the webs are intact it would be repairable.

Biggest issue being cost!

The damaged crank is repairable, but it is cheaper to buy a new one. The machinist at the local Harley shop said my cylinders need to be bore .010" over, but there is no oversize pistons available. So, I need to buy a new cylinder/ piston set. Has anyone had this problem?

Have you checked for a different brand of piston ? Wiseco or another brand ?
Often there are oversizes made by aftermarket suppliers that "Oem" does'nt cover.

"Buell" and "cheap" are 2 words that don't occur in the same sentence.

Check the classifieds for good usable 2nd hand.

Hogs has a crank but i don't know if it is the same as your year model. They did make changes.

Even though a D/H crank repair will cost more i suspect it will give you a superior crank than "Oem".

Given they would have to be bored out, and then replated with nicisil, it is probably cheaper to buy new jugs (though I don't know how much they cost for sure).

I know that for my dirt bikes, it's inevitably $400 plus to rebore / replate, and that's just one cylinder.

Reep is right , the nicasil costs an arm and a leg!
Post some pics of the jugs n pistons , at 18k they should'nt be worn , perhaps you could get away with a cleanup but can't say without seeing.

Interestingly my crank failed at marginally more mileage - 21k, cause unknown. 05 model.

Watch the used market also. That &*&^^&& Corolla sheared the mount completely off my rear head, and I was able to scare up a replacement (used but clean up and drop in) head for half of what I paid for my last KLR-250 head.

Though maybe that was different, as crank problems are likely to kill cylinders and pistons but not heads, and there are a non trivial number of XB12 crank failures.
