Okay this is a broad based thread I know, but I am trying to get an idea of what oils people are using?the reason being is I have started doing some research on different brands of oils, because from what I am reading the Screamin Eagle oil is really not all it's cracked up to be,and then my 2nd part of the question is,if you do use a different oil brand,do you use it all the way thru the bike, ierimary case and engine or just engine?I noticed on the Castrol website that they have 1 oil or the crankcase, and another for the primary, and if your wondering why I ask these questions,it's because my warranty is now expired and I am going to do all my own service work, well most of it anyway's. Cheers Phil |

In the states at least, you can use whatever oil you want and not worry about the warranty, assuming you don't go and put something totally wrong in and it grenades the engine. Anyway I run the Harley Syn3 in the engine and Formula+ in the primary. My most recent change I used Mobil 1 Diesel 10w-40 because of the cold weather, it is hard to start. Also, whatever you do, do not use gear oil or any other GL5 in the primary as it can cause stator damage. Its only a quart, so just use the Formula+ |

Thanks Froggy,I run Syn 3 in the bike now,but I want to use an oil that I can get locally, otherwise I have to get it from my dealer 5 hours away, but the real reason is that I read some info in regards to Sunoco oils and internal scarring of engines,I am looking at Motul oils if I can get them from my local auto shop.keep the info coming guys & gals |

I use Amsoil vtwin in both holes. Runs great, fan comes on less, and it shifts smoother. Win. |

I use just 20-50 regular oil in both my bikes. And 15-30 years ago I used to use straight 40 or 50 wt. racing oil in my 74cu chopped Super Glide. (Any oil is better than no oil.). Although I tend to be anal to the point that I change it way to often or soon. Hell if you use a good quality oil and change it regularly and don't abuse the machine it should last a long time. Oil is cheap and rebuilding an engine is expensive, although to some people, changing oil and rebuilding an engine is FUN. And I do like to have fun. |

I'm running Syn3 right now, but will switch to Mobil1 V Twin with my next oil change. The Harley Syn3 is around $12/quart. Mobil1 is about $10/quart. I'll be using it in the primary and the motor. |

I am sure this question has been asked before but is there enough difference between the Mobil1 (auto 15/50) and the Vtwin (I am guessing 20/50) to justify the cost difference? I can get the Mobil1 15/50 from Costco for about $5.95 a quart. Thanks. |

After changing to the Amsoil,I have to say the shift is silky smooth now, where as before it was notchy,so I have to say at this point in time happy with the change, and I can get the oil locally. |

Mobil 1 20-50 Vtwin in the tranny and RP 20-50 Max Cycle plus half a pint of Schaeffer's Moly E.P. Oil Treatment for the motor. The RP did not do well in the tranny..so switched back to the Vtwin after a day. Buford is happy.. (Message edited by Buford on July 10, 2009) |

Amsoil 20 50 (MCV) Motorcycle. $8.25 qt Amsoil 20 50 (ARO) Motor Oil. $6.80 qt Mobil 1 15 50 Car oil $5.50 qt or $22 gal. Mobil 1 20 50 V twin $8.25 qt. I have tried only the 20 50 ams (mcv) and the 15 50 mobil 1. The cool thing about Amsoil is their oils are more universal so the (ARO) can be used in our bikes in both holes MA rating. I guess the (MCV)gets the new MA2 rating. Both oils are API SL/CF, CI-4 Plus API SJ, SH, SG... ISO-L-EMA JASO MA (Motorcycle) Cummins 20071, 20072, 20076, 20077. The (MCV) gets a couple extra ratings but I dont know if warrants the extra price. |

Hey guys! I've had my 2000 M2 for about a year. I was always a believer in using Castrol GTX 20w-50 and changing it every 1000 miles, after I had to replace my rocker cover gaskets, I changed the oil at 800 miles, it looked and felt burnt. I ordered some Amsoil 20w-50, but put in more Castrol during the oil change. I rode a couple tanks of gas before the Amsoil came in. When I changed the oil, it had already looked burnt with little black specs. Now with the Amsoil I am around 500 miles and the oil still looks clear. I have not put it into the transmission yet, because that was changed with the Harley oil just before I bought the bike. I plan on changing it at the end of the season. |
