Anyone know if one can use an ECM from a different XB12 in the Uly, burned with an appropriate Ulysses map , for instance to replace a cracked Uly ECM? Bike is question is an '06, with the prong connector between the two plugs, so I know I would be looking for a similarly configured ECM. Used Uly-specific ECMs are few and far between, but the options open up if other ECMs will work. Thanks for your help! |

There is no such thing as a Uly spec ECM*, all XB12 models for a given year use the same programming. Just find another 04-07 XB12 ECM, and if it is off an 04/05, I recommend flashing the map off an 06 or 07 due to the differences in the intake. *Only exception is the Ulysses police bike has its own tweaks |

Excellent, thank you! |

...and there was no Ulysses police bike in 06... |

Froggy- did they typically update the ECM maps several times per year? I ask because I sold my old 07 stock ECM to Webe; he used it to replace a bad ECM on his 07 Uly. Now this may just be subjective, but he swore his bike ran better than it ever had with my ECM. I'm just wondering if my 07 had a different map than his original. |

Yes. The flashes were updated...not continually, but there were several revisions of each base map as improvements were found/developed. The gibberish alphanumeric code that ecmspy pulls out as the identification...is the revision number. |

I have successfully run an ECM, from an '05 XB12, flashed with a '06 and '07 Eprom (separately of course.) If you are going to toss the faulty ECM, I would like to have it, I will pay shipping... |

No, there was only one 07 map. I spoke with him on the phone, he was having multiple issues regarding his ECM so it wasn't running right at all. Some years had multiple revisions, specifically 08, which had multiple tweaks to iron out kinks in the new fuel system. |

"Used Uly-specific ECMs are few and far between, but the options open up if other ECMs will work." I would advise you to make sure a used ECM is not damaged if that is what you intend to buy. |

Will do, thanks! Teeps, my ECM is cracked, and I want to have a second one on standby, or in case I find the perfect repositioning solution, but the original isn't malfunctioning yet. |

Update - I started this thread after my Uly cut out twice during a trip down to Boston from Burlington, VT and back (once each way). This is two instances during two four-hour rides. On a recent ride the ECM seemed to pack it in fully, as it began cutting out again and again, each time only for an instant, several times within a few minutes. Removing the seat, I saw that the ECM cracks, which appear as hairline cracks when it is cold, had seemed to expand to larger cracks. I had purchased a used ECM from eBay from a 2004 Firebolt earlier in the week and plugged it in. Rode away without issue and still have not had the cutting out reoccur. I had tested the ECM briefly and performed a TPS reset, so it was plug and play ready to go. Now that I'm home, I'm trying to burn the Race Map to the ECM, but after I cut and paste the values to the fuel and ignition maps, ECMSpy tells me that "EEPROM not compatible with this ECM." Can anyone tell me why? |

The physical memory locations are different between the Race ECM and Standard ECM. You a Race Eprom can be burned into a non race ECM; but it does not work. (don't ask me how I know.) But you can burn the individual race maps for front and rear, fuel and ignition. I've done it and did not notice any difference between the hybrid stock/race setup and pure stock. |

Thanks for weighing in, Teeps. So we're clear, I'm not loading and trying to burn the complete Race EEPROM. I'm doing what it sounds like you describe - copying the fuel and ignition maps into the stock map grids, then trying to burn those new values to the ECM. I did this successfully with my stock Uly ECM, and I did notice an improvement in the torque curve and smoothness of the engine. I think I'm trying the exact same procedure now, but it doesn't seem to accept it. I'm a bit confused as to why it tells me that the EEPROM is not compatible, as my understanding is that I am not changing the EEPROM other than the fuel and ignition maps. If anyone else has any thoughts, I'd appreciate hearing them. |

Palankearney Posted on Tuesday, July 02, 2013 Thanks for weighing in, Teeps. So we're clear, I'm not loading and trying to burn the complete Race EEPROM. Roger that. Could the ECM be for a XB9? Never mind, you described it as having the center ground termial between the connectors. (Message edited by teeps on July 02, 2013) |

Interesting. So for an 07 XB12 (i.e. a Uly), anyone done the race ECM "cut and paste" thing, with a stock exhaust (with actuator), then actually put the bike on a dyno with an exhaust gas analyzer? |

No but have tuned several bikes with stock pipes and they can be made much better. Not sure how much I care for the "race" maps. Seen several lately that I was told were "race" maps and they were really odd, too much fuel down way low and a lean spot dead center. |

Thanks Jim! Does it vary from bike to bike? Or will one tune be fairly portable? I wouldn't mind buying tune data, but I want it to be based on solid science and hard dyno / EGA data, not what somebody "thinks" is right. Ideally, I want the tune Buell would have offered had the EPA not been "helping" them... Stock motor, stock intake, stock exhaust. |

Thanks for weighing in, folks. For my experience, I was quite happy with the race map (successfully cut and pasted) into my stock ecm with stock pipe and UNI filter. It felt smoother, more linear than stock, and the shudder while revs drop to idle that a lot of folks mistake for brake shudder was gone. Now I just want the same map on my replacement ECM. |
