OK, a buddy of mine on his KTM 950SM wants to go for an overnite ride somewhere within several hours from San Diego. I want to do something that I have not ridden or ridden much. I know the local San Diego mountains a bit too well. What is near the LA mountains that could be interesting? San Bernadino? Who knows a good loop and place to stay? Thanks in Advance. Jonsocal. |

Angeles Crest Highway. (2) Several roads off of it are great too. Great sweepers. Look out for squids on the weekend otherwise awesome ride. |

Add aggressive CHP enforcement (weekends.) How far north do you want to go on this ride? Solvang would be a good destination for 2 reasons. You could visit Buell-ton and get some split pea soup from Anderson's and visit the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum. Last time I was there I think it cost $10 to get in. The good part is you can get up close to the bike... but no touching is allowed. Solvang is about 250 miles from S.D., direct route. |

The SCAB ride this past weekend hit some of the nice Canyon roads above Malibu, met for lunch at the Rock Store, and then did the 33 and Cerro Noroeste after lunch. Those two roads are absolutely fabulous and I HIGHLY recommend doing them if you haven't before. They're covered in this route: http://goo.gl/maps/lw8ye It's a long one day ride from San Diego, Reindog and I logged just over 500 miles on the day. But as a part of a 2 day ride sampling the best that the mountains north of LA have to offer, it'd be easy. And there's a lot of nice places to stay in Ojai, right at the beginning of the mighty 33. In the 80s we would ride South to Ensenada then South East to San Felipe. Probably stay there then head North to Calexico then back to San Diego on I believe it was 94. Actually did this trip several times in a single day. The Mexican hwy 3 between Ensenada and San Felipe is a wonderful road. The used to have a race there for older sports cars years ago. Been a few years though I have to wonder if its still safe. |

Well, I grew up in Hemet, and always enjoyed the roads in the San Jacinto Mts (74, 243, etc.) There are lots of 2-track fire roads as well. I went to college in Los Angeles in the 60s, and Angeles Crest was nice...back then. --Doc |

Al, I must have, just missed you at the Rock Store Sunday. Another Buell (tuber) pulled in; so it was time to leave... :-) Dr_greg, The ACH is better than nice now that it's been repaved. But as Tootal pointed out, many squids and ricky's out there on the weekends. |

OK, I found a place where I can stay for free in Big Bear. (Buddy just bought a house near Big Bear Lake). I am checking out Lytle Creek and areas around Lake Arrowhead on Saturday. May check out Angeles Crest on Sunday. Still working on the route at this moment. It may change completely. Starting from San Diego, probably go through the local mountains through the San Jacinto/Idylwild area and then into Big Bear Saturday. Not sure where after that. Maybe head west through Angeles Crest and then towards the coast. I could pick up some fire roads in Idylwild on day 1. Still a work in progress. Anyone else want to join? Leaving San Diego early Saturday morning. |
