just wondering what the concensous is here on what tires to use to a little more traction offroad. i do alot of commuting so a full on nobbie is not gonna happen. but i do venture off the beaten path too. the michilens are street tires but the bike does really well with them so i'm curious to see how well it does with a more offroadable tread. hope this doesn't start a big ruckus but i'm looking forward to seeing all the opinions. thanks guys |

D616.
They do just fine on-pavement for me, as well as in the rough stuff. Nice thick carcass, not an expensive tire either. |

Having gone through a few sets of Syncs and 616s. I am riding on 616s. The Syncs are better for sporty riding, but not by much at all. The 616s are better in wet conditions (not that I get much of that) and are clearly better when the pavement ends. On really rough or muddy surfaces, I have found no clear advantage to either. The Dunlops seem to last about 10% longer and cost less. Neither tire seems to ever be in stock locally. |

I have been riding Pirelli MT60 front with a TKC80 rear for 2 years now. I commute to work everyday and ride it off-road when I can. PS I rode the BMW GS Rally this year with this setup. Now that TKC80s are available in our wheel sizes I will try a matching front and back set when my current set is due... probably mid next summer. Cheers,
This last pic is after my labrador trip, 9 days of riding 50% gravel 50%paved.

I have had the TKC80 on the rear only, and it is a night-and-day difference in the rough from the other options listed here. So if that matters most, then the contis are the only choice. The D616 I think is the best all around tire in my opinion for mixed riding. I could tell little difference in the dirt with the Scorpion Trails (very disappointing - sold them and put D616s back on) to the Bridgestone Battleaxe BT-023s currently mounted on the bike. |

If you're talking mud or sand the D616 would be better than the Trails but if you're talking an occasional gravel/dirt road or jeep trail then the Pirelli Scorpion Trails do me real well. They last a lot longer than the D616's too. |

Ratbuell d616 oh no you didn't yes, I did. Only brand of tire that's been on my Uly for nearly 30k miles, and the only one I'll continue to run. Handles great (no chicken strips), wears nicely at 38/40 f/r pressures, and doesn't care if I'm on pavement or dirt or gravel. I've even done a couple hiking trails with 'em. Shortcoming there was a 500lb motorcycle, more than the tires My tubers run Michelin Pilot Road's...and the CR will switch to them once it wears out its current shoes. They're awesome tires for the street and I love the dual compound for wear. But I won't take them off-road (the bikes, or the tires). For what the Uly is designed for...the D616 performs just about perfectly for me. Although...I do wish they'd make a dual-compound version. |

Have we had a "lifespan report" on the TKC80's yet? I liked the Syncs on my 9sx, great street tire, wouldn't immediately fall to pieces on grass or gravel. On the Uly they didn't last long though. Haven't tried the Scorpion Trails, probably a good choice. I've been running PR2's on the Uly now, and love them, though they give up a little on grass / gravel. For real dirt work I am very happy with Continental GS tires. To make them fit I had to buy a pretty expensive one time accessory, a 1996 Kawasaki KDX-200, for about $1000. But it totally transformed the handling of the Uly as a result. It can now land 4'+ jumps onto and off of a table top, I can pick it up and carry it up a hill, and I've rolled it down muddy Kentucky hillsides with no significant damage.

Oh and in case there are any skeptics regarding the TKC80s ability on the road you should take a look at my pegs. My righthand peg in particular got grinded up pretty good. My ricer buddies are always awe-struck whenever i bring the tall bike down so low that my pegs start to spark... with a tire that looks like its from thunderdome, not one of their fancy race tires. |

Just took my TKCs out for drive number 2. Was all street riding. They handled great at speeds up to 110kph. Was mostly city driving though. They are for sure not as sticky as my syncs but so far I love them. They are fairly quiet with minimal humming. I have also just installed a set of rox risers that may be canceling some of the vibs. Anyhow so far I love them |
