Lucky me. I found another leak. As you can see in the picture. it is dripping down onto the muffler. I have not removed the c/s sprocket cover but my guess is that it is coming from the countershaft seal. Anybody ever fixed one of these? bb

Check your neutral indicator which is just above and to the right of C/S sprocket. Mine had started to loosen after 38,000 miles and was the source of my oil leak that looked very similar to your photo. |

Yup. Easy fix and inexpensive seal. |

Mine did that at about 5,000 miles. The out put shaft seal was replaced under warranty. |

I noticed a leak on mine on the opposite side the other day. Dribbling from somewhere to the kick stand mount. Still trying to figure that one out. |

Could also be the rear rocker box working its way down. hopefully not, hopefully its the oil sensor. |

I guess I should mention I have a new rattling sound at certain RPMs, too. Hopefully they are connected and tightening/resealing the neutral switch will fix the problem... If it is the output seal, I am guessing it can be replaced from the outside; hence, the quick turnaround at the dealer. Thanks for the help, guys. As always, you rock... bb |

What does that mean: rear rocker box is working its way down? bb |

Rocker box staying still, oil working it's way down. |

Right, sorry. Drool from the rocker box, and gravity, and it comes out... somewhere at the bottom. Rocker boxes would leak like clockwork on a tuber, but they are pretty good on an XB. They can still leak though. |

Replacing the output seal is easy. If you check out my thread "Knock, Knock Who's there" I've post a lot of pictures of the engine. |

OK, I got around to pulling the c/s sprocket cover today and looking behind there. I don't think I am much farther than when I started. Here's what I saw: There is some oily grime above the neutral switch thingy, but it is not wet... Below the c/s sprocket shaft it is wet and drippy: Any thoughts? bb |

My guess would be starter gasket. |

Trans out put shaft seal. Right behind the front drive pulley. It changes from the outside. |

Here's a picture of where the seal is. The big nut is left hand thread. Starter does have a gasket also, but you need to remove the primary cover to get to the bolts. DAMHIK. May want to check if the rear v/c gasket is leaking. Mine did. See the residue?

I don't think the leak is from the v/c gasket. The starter is a possibility. And I am leaning toward combination problem: starter and neutral switch. I have to ride the bike this week and will check out behind the c/s sprocket this weekend. Maybe, I will order the parts to replace all three seals/gaskets, just in case. I may try to clean the area while I have the c/s sprocket cover off and may be able to get some good information by re-examining after this week's commute to LostAngeles. Thanks, guys, Bill |

After that last post, I had an epiphany: clean the area and check it after the 400-mile-round-trip to LA? So, I cleaned it and snapped this before pic: I'll post an after pic later this week, and we'll identify the problem seal...hopefully. bb |

Billy, I think the starter gasket is probably ok. It's made of steel and rubber laminate. Looks like it may be leaking from above the c/s seal. Hope it isn't the rocker box gasket, someone mentioned they had an update. |

While bad news, that makes some sense; however, wouldn't I see some seepage through the fan and down the back of the rear cylinder fins? I don't see that. And it is much, much more wet below the neutral switch and the c/s sprocket than above. Thanks, Bill bb |

Yes, leaking rocker gasket will make a mess in the fan and on the rear cylinder fins. I'd suggest you get Simple Green or a similar de-greaser and get that whole area of the engine as clean as you can. You can then spray foot powder on the area and the area that's leaking will quickly show up. Transmission output seal seems like the most likely thing, but starter gaskets have rarely been known to leak. It doesn't appear to be the cylinder base gasket because that area's clean as well. |

Well I cannot see any more oil dripping. So, I am left thinking that the oil that was there came from a vent hose. Here's why I think that: The only time it puked oil was in extreme heat where there would be more vaporization of the engine and primary fluids. I am not sure where the vent tubes are supposed to be routed, but I think my bike has been modified enough that there may be a vent that drops down near the trans. Thoughts? bb |

Mine leaks too..after awhile I quit caring. I clean it up on the few occasions that I wash it and I pretty much ignore it otherwise other than to check that my fluid levels are adequate. I can't see it from where I'm sitting! |

The trans vent goes up and is strapped to the rear shock. The valve cover vents into the bottom of the air cleaner housing. It's possible the trans vent clamp is a little loose and seeping out at the bottom on top of the trans and running off the right side. It's difficult to get to with the starter in place, plus it's a machine pressed clamp.

All that oily grime is infront of the plastic wire protector in front of the sprocket. I would start looking above that and forward. I found lots of spots where the transmission vent hose would get rubbed through, I would follow that very carefully. |

I recently had the shock out to replace a lowering collar with the stock one. Everything went back together pretty well, but not as cleanly as it fit before I disassembled everything. I bet I put a kink in or pinched the trans vent hose. I remember fooling around with it and trying to route it properly... Good news is that I don't see where else the problem could be coming from. bb |

Question: In the photo is the trans vent hose the black hose that parallels engine oil hose? The one that is draped over the trans toward the rear? That almost looks like it is attached to the crankcase... In my racing days, I had to run vent hoses into a catch bottle so as to avoid oil dripping on the track. Took a lot of fun out of the game, but it helped me know how much fluid the crankcase, trans, and diff would spew during the course of a race. It was surprising. So, I am not surprised by the possibility that this is a chaffed, cracked, clogged, or crimped hose that let go... I wonder if I should approach this from the top or bottom. In other words: should I remove the shock again or the starter? Thanks, guys, bb |

BB, yes, that is the hose. It will end up going over the starter and through the frame to strap to the rear shock where it vents. No catch can and it's pretty high up. I don't think there is too much pressure in the transmission, so I suspect it's from your engine instead. Removing the starter requires pulling the primary cover. Found this out after I had the cover back on and was placing the starter. Have to checked your air cleaner to see if there is a lot of oil residue in it? Maybe your oil has been over filled and it's from blowby through the vent hoses? |

As long as you're in there with your '06 you should take the time to check your 77-connector and/or eliminate it... |

My neutral light has been working intermittantly. I removed the c/s cover, and the area around the switch is damp (with oil) and collecting dust. Somewhat like your pictures, but to a lesser degree. Are these switches prone to failure and leakage? Does the pulley have to be removed to replace the switch? |

I think you can sneak it out, but watch out for the aluminum washer. |
