Hi All,

You may remember about my bike letting go back in Sept.

Harley took my bike in and fixed it for free. Well they charged me 150$ for an insurance deductible? My warranty ended April 24 2010. This happened in Sept 2011.

Anyhow, what broke was a channel lock key. A little tiny piece of metal that led to the destruction of my engine when it broke.

Here is a list of what they changed:

Pinion gear
nut, jam
key square
Gaskets Gearcase cover,
Gaskets oil pump cover,
Gaskets engine top end,
Piston ring set,std 3.5 bore
Intake value 7mm
Exhaust valve 7mm
Intake pushrod 020 shorter
Exhaust pushrod, 020 shorter
Cylinder head front
cylinder head back,
Spacer oil gear,
Clamp, muffler to header,
stud,
seal exhaust
retaining ring,
flange nut,
shoulder screw
spark plug 10r12x
insert,
lock washer
bolt
oil filter
o-ring,
205 liter drum 20w50 360

They charged me 150$ for insurance deductible, and 40$ for an oil change.

That's really great news. It would be a tremendous service to the community if you could describe what, if anything, you needed to do to receive such great treatment. Did you have to call customer service? Did the dealer work with you on contacting Harley? Was it always assumed that they'd fix it, or did you have to talk them into it? I'd be very interested in hearing about that, and I suspect others would too.

Add to Ski's question list (if I may be so presumptuous):

Was this a factory warranty or an 'aftermarket' warranty (sometimes referred to as a third party warranty)?

My best luck was with having my salesman talk to the service department.

My bike broke down and i had it towed to thier facilities.

My warrenty coverage ended in April 2010.

They said it was major and they did not know what it was but it was very serious.

Talking to the service department head... I said well, so I guess I should look into selling it off as a write off then. She said, no, no, no.... Don't do that. lets find out whats wrong with it first.

I ask how much that would cost and she said probably about 300$. I said 300$ just to find out my bike is a write off? doesn't sound good.

She said HD has a budget for this kind of thing, and that if I should the wilingness to open it up and find out what is wrong they will probably pay to fix it. I was skeptical. She assured me that she could make this happen.

So I said go ahead and open it up.

Then next day she said it would cost me 150$ for an insurance deductible and that HD was paying the bill.

Thats all i know.

BTW!

my bike was cutting, losing power, and even sometimes only working on 1 cylinder. It did this all summer.

After HD fixed my bike, all these problems are gone.

My advice for those with similar issues is perhaps get your channel key lock verified. Although I don't even know if that doable.

What is the channel lock key? Does my 08 XT have one? Thanks!

I think the answer as to why Matt was treated so well is hidden in his post...

See if you can detect it here:

I said well, so I guess I should look into selling it off as a write off then. SHE said, no, no, no.... Don't do that. lets find out whats wrong with it first.

Either Matt has beautiful, hypnotizing eyes that make women quiver and do anything for him, or women are indeed the fairer sex.

Motorbike, yours likely has one. It is a very common method of retention in engines from small to large. I've heard them called key way channels and, if I'm not mistaken, believe this is what we are discussing.

There are a handful of them in my Brit bike engines.

It sounds like Matt ran into the best service rep I ever heard of. In any company. In any industry.

It's actually quite common, nearly every dealer of any kind of vehicle has factory authorization for "AWA" (After Warranty Adjustment, as Ford called it, others similar). Most have time/mileage/cost limitations and require customer and dealer participation. I used to work for a truck dealership and we used it all the time. Great way to retain customers.

Based on what's been described, sounds like the dealership was not really providing a valuable freebie, but was being reimbursed by HD for this repair/maintenance. Not a bad deal for the dealer either, especially if they happened to have a slow shop at that moment. Reimbursable repairs is business that'll keep their mechanics earning billable hours where otherwise it might be profitless down time.
