About to buy a 2003 xb9r with 6000 miles on it. Any sage advice on the reliability of it and common problems? Thanks! |

Put the race ECU on and a better pipe. Run Amsoil. Put good tires on it and ride the wheels off it. |

Consider belt/pulley upgrade... but if you don't make the change, you can NEVER twist the pulley if you ever do a wheel change. Original belt was prone to breakage if twisted. |

Make sure your wheel bearing seals are the red updates. Also find out if the crankshaft nut has been re-torqued to the new spec, 220 lbs I believe, may be wrong it's been awhile since I did mine. Run whatever synthetic oil you choose but make sure you do not use Mobil 1 gear lube in the primary. Oh, one more thing, the top end is supposed to sound like a sock full of nickels in a dryer when running right. After all that ride the piss out of it, Buells like it. |

Congratulations on your "new" bike. The absolute FIRST thing you should do after getting it is check the tire pressures and adjust the suspension based on your weight according to the guidelines in the owner's manual. Both of these make a huge difference in the way the bike handles. |

Check the spark plugs for oil! The valve stem seals on this year suck and leak, this leads to more problems lower in the cylinders, which leads to a complete top end rebuild/replacement. If the tops of the pistons are clean and the sparks never black and wet, then you are in good shape and I would change the stem seals to the newest style as soon as possible if it hasn't already been done. The new seals are blue. (Message edited by Greg_E on November 12, 2011) |
