Hello,

OK, I have a ceramic coated race header and need some experienced opinions. I just bought the Buell pro series muffler and it rattles by shaking it by hand, damn.

Is it possible to weld it internally to eliminate the rattle?

Who elses muffler would you use?

thanks in advance
Bruce

Bruce,
The rattle is probably the perferated tube that runs down the middle of the muffler. Mine had broken free and I had to fit little tabs to hold it in place when I re-packed the muffler.

Bruce,
If the muffler is new and the rattle bothers you, return it for a new one that is not rattling.

Guys,

I found the rattle after I posted this( the tube actually slide back and forth), think I'll take it apart and do a fix. I'd return it, but if it happened once, it may again and I'm quite sure I can do a good fix of some sort. I think the tab, as mentioned will work well.

Where do I find SS rivets???

Is it necessary to re-pack these. I'm thinking a bit of thrup might be nice. Some feedback as to how load these get would be appreciated.

thanks for you input, appreciated...
Bruce

...experience says aluminum rivets won't elongate/enlarge the holes...local hardware store should have all you need.

I see a guy with a race muff everyday...the holes on the back of his can are seriously elongated and the whole muffler and endcap wiggle like mad to and fro. I think spot welding nuts inside the muffler and using screws with starwashers would be a better idea.

I think if the holes are already elongated new rivets probably won't hold well for long.

Just repacked my race muffler this weekend. As far as I can tell, the perforated tube is not fastened to either end of the can but is held in place by the inlet and outlet tubes. It's kept from rattling by the packing material, so if your tube rattles or slides back and forth its probably time for a repack.

On a related note. Where on earth does one find stainles steel rivets? I must have gone to a dozen hardware and home center stores this weekend. A few had steel 1/8" rivtes, but none had 3/16". I had to put it together with Al rivets. Much easier on the ears now. The stringy fiberglass in the packing material from American Sport Bike makes the job a snap.

Dave,

I saw that too! Someone on ebay mated a rave muff to a standard X1 type header. What they'll try to get over on ya!

I emailed him and told him this. He will not admit that it is not the race header. I think at this point he thinks I am a nut. I sent him a pic of a race header off of one of his other auctions and the pic on this auction and I pointed out the difference. He emailed me back that they were both his and both the same.

Interesting...I didn't know the stock header was the same diameter as the race header/muffler.

Yeah the collector is the same size but the primary tube length is what makes the race header special.

How ya gonna ride a bike with that on it? The muffler will second as a left side highway peg. What the dude should do is sell a set of bubs built the same way, then you would have both pegs..DERRR!
