Last year's hotel in Vernon was a dud. Loni mentioned Penticton. Should we start at Penticton Lakeside (if we can get rooms?) Go north to Vernon, east to the ferry and beyond, then south to overnight in Creston or Salmo. That's about a 300 mile day. Then dip south to the area we did last year by the dam. (in that in-effing-credible side wind!) IF we start at Penticton, what night? Friday? Or do you want to be in Whistler Friday, Penticton Saturday. Creston Sunday. I'm on vacation so I've lots of time. How's everyone else's? There was some concern about the new vehicle seizure rules up here. Do we avoid Canada or just behave a little better? Personally. I think if cops down south saw us at play, they'd be mean too. But the opening question is how many days do you want to be out? |

Looking at last year's program, I see that we stayed two nights in Vernon. I'd prefer one night there. one night in Salmo, maybe. Next night to Grand Coulee would be an easy 300 km. 180 miles Salmo back to Vancouvert is 650 km., which is doable for those who need to be back the next day. Alternatively, if we stay in Kelowna instead of Penticton, we could go all the way to Creston via Nakusp and Kaslo, 513 km (300 miles). Then Creston to Grand Coulee via Sandpoint or Metaline Falls, Cusik, and Chewelah is 400 km. (240 miles.) (Message edited by Sportyeric on August 07, 2011) |

Looks like I will be laid up from some unexpected surgery to make Border Raid this year, but my thought will be with you, where ever you ride. Kelowna is always booked and WAY over priced on the long weekend. That’s why we’ve never stayed there before. Vernon is a dive, but at least it puts some mileage under you the first night. Important if you want to get to Creston the following day. Just a thought |

I'm up for whatever the group is wanting to do. I have Sat Sun and Mon off so may need to catch up if starting point is far away from Portland. Lock it down before it gets too late. Bob? Chris? Don? Mark? Eric? Harv? Galen? Do you copy? Mike over. |

I'm off work from Aug 26 to Sept 12, so I have the time! I'm up for whatever. I may try to make a run through North Cascades Hwy either on way up or back since it's been a long time. |

Looking back through the archives, I see where I was working in the dark two years ago on the planning too. I'm looking at Penticton on Friday night. Up to Kelowna then east then south to Beaverdell on Hwy 33 to Rock Creek, then east on Hwy 3 to Midway, crossing into the States, taking Hwy 21 to Republic and on to Grand Coulee for Saturday night. That's 390 km. Sunday: Grand Coulee to Lewiston/Clarkston and past it over the Oregon border to a restaurant just over the border for a late lunch (240 miles) then double back to Lewiston for the night. Next day, Monday, would be 500 miles home to Vancouver on Hwy 395 to Seattle then I5. So maybe if there are Canadians along who need to be home Monday night, they should knock off a few more miles Sunday rather than stopping in Lewiston? Alternate plan for Vancouverites: Grand Coulee to Lewiston on 395, then Wenatchee via Hwy 12. I've got calls in to hotels about rooms. We've left it pretty late. I'll post more this evening. An alternate plan would be Whistler Friday, Penticton Saturday, Grand Coulee Sunday, then home on Hwy 20. The first plan gives a longer ride on Friday for those of us who are off, and a chance to ride the road south of Lewiston, which I really like. Plus its a shorter ride for Mike and anyone else who is working Friday to hook up with us Saturday night. |

Hotels are still available for Whistler Friday if we wanted that. They want $133 for a room with two twin beds. Two queens is $158.(Another reason not to go that route, in my opinion.) Hotels are available in Grand Coulee. I've reserved six rooms there at either $84 or $94. They have others as well. Rooms are available at Lewiston at Inn America. I didn't ask the price but they were reasonable when Jaci and I stayed there a couple of years ago. Haven't heard back from Penticton. Chris and Loni have propsed a different plan, which I like. Friday night in Bellingham. (Vancouverites wanting a ride can do Mt. Baker.) Hwy 20 to Grand Coulee and stay there two nights. Figure out a day loop once we're there. Need to ask at the Econolodge in Bellingham about rooms. (Jaci stayed there on the way back from Woodland.) In Grand Coulee, Chris recomends the Coulee House Inn and Suites as being central for the laser show at the dam. Our hotel last time was out of the downtown at Center Lodge. I've already saved a block of rooms there for the Saturday night but we could change that. I can't remember the pub we were at there but it was good. Can anyone spot it on the map? http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&tab=wl (Message edited by Sportyeric on August 14, 2011) |

OK. We have a group of rooms booked at the Coulee House. 2 queens with a dam view are $99; one queen, no view, $79; mini-suite with two queens, no view, $89. Quote Border Raid AND #38526. We have 7, 3, and one rooms respectively. I guess the group rate is dependent on that number, mnore or less. There are more rooms available. I haven't contacted the Econolodge in Bellingham yet. Busy with parents visiting. |

They use to have Dam light shows on the weekends during the summer. This could be the last weekend they do it. Last time we were there we just missed out. I heard it is cool to watch! |

$62.99 and $71.99 for one queen or two, respectively. They'll adjust the price for John and Chris if they had been quoted something higher. I've asked them to save seven rooms (including Chris and John's) on the assumption that some people will just show up Saturday morning to join us. She explained that by blocking rooms for us, it keeps the group together in more or less adjoining rooms. |

Sorry to hear you can't make it, Lo and Don. We missed you at SPLASH. The Canadian thing is partly the new vehicle seizure laws here. I had a woman on the bus last week who had tried to get past just one more motorhome at the end of a downhill merge on the Malahat and lost her mini-van for a week. She had to select her best two out of eight duffle bags of samples for her sales business and bus home to Vancouver. Also, though, the lower price of everything in the U.S. due to the current state of the economy, makes it more affordable for all, I think. |
