I don't post things often but I have to share this. I finally got a chance to try the Erik Buell Racing ECM on my 09 ULY (still have a lot of snow around here) and all I can say is WOW. The fan never came on ,accelerated like a scolded dog and the was no discernible heat on my right leg. The bike is stock except for comfort kit and k&n air filter. Best $ I've spent on this bike to date. |

I've been wondering if I should order one, but I'm not made of money (and neither is my over-vigilant wife!) so I've hesitated. The more good things I hear about it, the more I feel like ordering it though. But I'm also thinking that I should order the 2010 wheel first instead of guard against bearing failures... So many motorcycle parts, so little money. BTW - I like a challenge to be able to read threads - makes me feel special. |

Cool part is that if you DOOOOOOOOO order it you can score a free Buell poster during the month of March. I'm just sayin' . . . Put your wife on the phone . . . I'll talk to her. Hahahahaha |

Get on Craig'sList and get rid of enough stuff to raise the funds. Best thing I have done to my Uly was the Erik Buell Racing ecm. Go on get rid of that junk you don't use. It made a huge improvement to my bike. |

Trevd, I know how you feel. Seems like a lot of money for something that you are not sure of. My bike really did run quite well with the stock ECM. I bought my ECM with money I saved up in a special Erik Buell Racing ECM account, which consisted of an envelope I kept hidden in my workshop. Any time I had a few dollars in my wallet, I forced myself to put a little away in the envelope. It really didn't take that long to make up $250. I just hope my wife understands if she ever finds out! I can hardly wait to get my XT out of winter storage and try this thing out! Besides, once you see the cool poster Court is offering you, you will wonder why you waited so long! |

I see some reports on the race ECM from Erik Buell Racing for 2009 and earlier years but the reports from 2010 bike and the Erik Buell Racing racing ECM seem harder to find. So are there any reports on the 2010 Erik Buell Racing ECM with stock muffler and how it may change MPG and performance. 2010 mileage on the stock ECM could use some improvement. I doubt the racing ECM would get better mileage but it is worth asking the question if anyone has some real experience they could kindly share. |

Alchemy, it is hard to find 2010 data due to the short production run of 2010 bikes. For what its worth, every Buell I put a race ECM on has gained a good 10-15% in fuel economy. I hypermile the things and log every tank, so I have a measurable and controlled test. 75MPG best tank average ain't bad for a 1203CC motor |

Ourdee, good idea. Think I might try that. Then again I should probably do it so I can fill my propane tank. But who needs hot water anyway? Couldn't I just sell some blood instead? Froggy, you and your MPG... Still not getting much better than 45MPG. But then again "I can't ride - 55" |

Ourdee - Funny, I was just thinking last night that I should sell a few of the parts from my last bike that I still have lying around taking up space. The new ECM might just be the incentive I need... And Motorbike - I know all about saving for bike stuff. When I was without a bike for a couple of years shortly after university, I started a Toonie Jar (Toonie's are the Canadian $2 coin) to save up for a bike. Unfortunately, most of that got spent on beer at the pub when I decided to go back to school for a year so that I'd have enough money to not have to save Toonies in a jar. I still remember paying for beer with pocketfuls of coins... the waitresses must have loved me! Good times... |

I rode Timmy's bike that afternoon and loved it too. He did forget to mention the installation. Monkey, football, etc. |

1. find a good hiding spot. 2. any extra bill prior to payday goes in. 3. craigslist sales get turned into one dollar bills and put into box. 4. figure out what is being bought ahead of time.

Hope programming same as now. Eulysses, I was wondering the same thing. Does anyone know if Erik Buell Racing is always looking for ways to improve the programming on the Erik Buell Racing ECM for the Uly and making changes? Or did they get it right a while back and are now moving on to bigger and better things? Is the ECM I bought in December 2010 the same as one I could order today? Thanks in advance guys. |

Froggy, Thanks for the comment. I agree it is a small universe of 2010s. I was even surprised that a 2010 ECM was offered. It seems it would be hard to extrapolate from the earlier bikes due to the 2nd sensor. Of course it could be even better MPG I guess. |

Why does the race ecm improve mileage? I would assume that it richens up the fuel mixture to allow the bike to run cooler. |

It richens it up and improves the efficiency of the burn, which in the end consumes less fuel than running lean to meet EPA regulations. Also, it will run better at lower RPMs and with less throttle, resulting in you needing to use fewer throttle twists to drive in the same conditions. It really does transform the bike with no negative side effects. |

I'm getting one as well, but nothing comes for free . . . Along with more power, more fuel economy, and more money, the Race ECM also leads to the production of more atmospheric pollution. Side effects (direct effects, actually) are that the engine produces much more sulfur and nitrogen oxides, more carbon monoxides and dioxides, and other heavy particulates poisonous for man. Motorcycles are already horrible from the standpoint of emissions of toxic pollutants when compared to any auto. The Race ECM bumps the ante. Wonder what offsets (if any) would be gained by the increased mileage. (Message edited by Desert_bird on March 17, 2011) |
