my 09 xt with supposedly 10 ecm flash runs really well compared to the 08 i had before. BUT when it heats up, like to 200F or 100C the check engine lite comes on. no other indication, still runs fine just cooks my left leg more than usual. i am measuring temp with the oil dipstick i got from American Sport Bike and it seems accurate. normally when this occurs the fan still doesnt come on til i shut it down, i think it has come on while running but not positive. this is an HDI catalytic bike, with "confort" kit. (what a joke the air scoop is for that) anybody got real data on temps, fan cycles etc for the 2010 flash?? |

It sounds like you have some kind of issue. With the 2010 flash, the fan should come on at any speed above 15 MPH. If it's not doing that, you may not have the latest ECM flash. I'm not sure about the temperature parameters for the new scheme. I think once you turn the bike off they're basically the same as the pre-10 parameters. Your left leg is getting hot? That's a new one; almost everyone complains of heat on the right side. You can improve the performance of the Comfort Kit by either sealing off the openings in the frame above the rear cylinder head (under the seat) using adhesive backed aluminum HVAC tape, or by installing weatherstripping between the bottom of the seat and the frame rail. The right side scoop on the Comfort Kit will force hot air out of this gap when you're riding along until the fan comes on. |

ok, my bad. right leg gets cooked. and now that you mention it, yeah i seem to remember hearing the bit about above 15mph, but would that be without relation to temperature? and no, i dont think it does that, will check with dealer about the flash rev, but sure dont want to change anything, it runs super the way it is apart from some lovable quirks and surprise hicups. |

John- yea, that's the way the latest flash is supposed to work. Apparently the idea is that by having the fan run ALL the time the bike is above 15 MPH, it doesn't need to run nearly as much when the bike's going slow or stopped. If you don't hear it kick on above 15 MPH with a warm engine (IIRC it doesn't kick on until the engine's at least nominally warm) I'll bet you don't have the latest flash. Seal off the top of the frame or seal the gap between the frame and the seat on the right side, and your hot right leg will be cured. |
