Hi all, I have been noticing that I am getting a cling-ca-ting-ting sound when I accelerate?? Any ideas? seems to be fine when I am just cruising around but if I accellerate with even a littlebit of gusto I get that sound. Thank you for your help, MMcC |

Detonation??? I found that the Uly is sensitive to gas. I try to buy 93 OCT from a dedicated hose, not a shared hose from the gas dispenser. You are sure to be getting a good bit of "regular" gas before the "premium" gas makes it through the hose when you get your gas from a single hose dispenser. Shell seems to be a good gas. Find a gas station that has the 3 hose dispensers. Run your tank low a couple of times and refill with the best brand premium gas you can find - PS - check your oil level too. Detonation goes away and it runs smoother. |

Pinging makes sense, cheap gas, running too hot, carbon deposits on the pistons, heads or valves, timing advanced too far. |

I never run premium. Only 10% ethanol. It'll ping if I lug it and get on it but only in real hot weather. |

Mal-adjusted primary chain could also be the culprit, depending on the clinking sound of course :P |

If it sounds like a couple of empty coke bottles being banged together really fast that's detonation which is real bad news. Run at least 89 octane and have the timing checked. |

OK thx for the feedback. Here is more info: I always run 91 AKI octane. Kind of sounds like metal coat hangers bang, together in an empty closet. |

I started getting the exact same thing this year on my 07. It started after I installed the comfort kit. I have figured it is detonation since it only happens when the bike is warm and when I accelerate hard. Not sure if he comfort kit is a cause or coincidence. |

My 09 is in the shop under warranty for this right now. I can really hear it at around 4500 rpm but I'm sure it is happening at lower rpms, just not hearing it there. I have been running high test all along. Hopefully they will figure it out |

I only run 93 octane. I try to get Mobil or BP if I can. I never get pinging unless I use 91 octane. I just came back from a trip in southwestern Wisconsin. I had to fill up with 92 octane and had some pinging climbing hills. I was two up and heavily loaded. Stopped for gas again and used 93 octane, no more pinging. |

My 2010 XB12XT does it too even with 93 octane. Its because of the 10% Ethanol . when I had my 07 Buell it never pinged but now you can't get 100% gas anymore ! And the new EPA under Obama is trying to put more Ethanol in gas, !5% more ! |

Actually you can get ethanol free gas, you may have to ride a ways though. http://pure-gas.org/ |

Unless something has changed, I thought all gas stations had to display the ethanol% on the pump (at least here in Michigan). Generally the Shell stations around here do not have the ethanol sticker but many of the other brands do (Speedway, Marathon, etc). Also - Exactly how does the inclusion of ethanol cause detonation in a same rated fuel (93 vs. 93)? |

This is an interesting and intermittent issue. I've noticed that when my Uly pings [ right around 4500 ] I can go into 4th or 5th and do some low rpm roll ons and the problem goes away. I'd say the computer is too slow at arriving at the proper AFV. Rolling TPS adjustments on the 08's and up??? QUESTION - Has anyone had this issue and replaced the stock EPA computer with the new Erik Buell Racing computer??? Did the new computer have any pinging issues???? |

"QUESTION - Has anyone had this issue and replaced the stock EPA computer with the new Erik Buell Racing computer??? Did the new computer have any pinging issues????" I did just that hoping it would stop my pinging issues and it did not. It's interesting yours pings at the same rpms as mine. The thing is it could be pinging at other rpms but you may not be able to hear it. It will be interesting to see if the shop can figure this out. So far it is the one and only issue I am having with my uly. |

Hmmm. Do you have irridium spark plugs??? I think I'm going to try some De-carbon product like Lucas or sea foam. |

Yes, I have irridiums. I just used some seafoam last month with no change. If you look at the ingredients in seafoam you will see it has some isopropal alcohol in it. I'm assuming to help with any water problems. it did nothing for my pinging. |

Is there anyone here that has the pings with stock plugs??? We might be on to something. The irridiums are one step colder than the stock plugs if my memory serves me correctly. |

Mine will ping with stock plugs. Only when pretty hot at between 3-4k rpm, 25-40% throttle. Has done it since new. Interestingly, it won't do it as easily when using gas with ethanol in it. 92 octane available here. Ethanol has higher octane than gas, so wonder if they are giving a little octane away with the ethanol blend. |

I ran 100 octane race gas available 60 Miles from here at Gauley Bridge WV. No ping. I reckon octane booster might help. Like I said, I can do hi gear low rpm roll ons and it goes away for a while. I still think its an AFV fueling issue that can be masked by race gas. |

In my particular case, I think it's a spark map issue. I think the spark is advanced considerably in that 3000 rpm range to help with emissions. My thought has always been that this also causes the cold "cough" at the same rpm point. Too lazy to learn ecmspy and fix it however. |

My 2008 will run fine on 89 octane with ethanol but will ping if I beat on it. It won't ping at all ever with premium in it. Conversely, my X1 will ping off the line with 93 octane gas. Has done it since it was new. |

My 09 XT has never had anything lower than 91 put in it, and I've never heard any pinging whatsoever, even in 100+ Oklahoma heat. Stock ECM, stock plugs, stock exhaust, and K&N filter inside a stock airbox. The ECM has been flashed with 2009 XB12R factory data, but I always assumed that the fuel/spark maps were identical. Maybe they're slightly different? Originally, I got the reflash done thinking that the "R" fan logic would be different than the "XT" comfort kit flash. I was wrong, the fan behaves the same as before. My X1 pinged BAD under hard acceleration after I rebuilt the engine with 10.5:1 CR. Backing off the timing a bit fixed that. |

I backed off the mechanical timing a half a notch and it was ping-free but now it seems to be coming back! Does the ECM relearn & readjust the timing electronically? |
