I just had the pleasure of running my 99 S3 out of gas, it seemed about 10 miles after the light came on. How far are you guys generally getting once it comes on? |

I would get nearly exactly 10 miles. I had two samples so it's at least consistent. If you haven't already noticed, it will run like crap until you run it above something like 2500 rpm for 5 - 10 minutes. Sorry I don't remember the particulars. Just go thrash it. |

I've experimented a lot, you should be able to get around 20 - 25. The reserve is 0.4 gallons (well on a X1 anyways). So 1/2 your MPG and you'll be in the ballpark. A lot of times I didn't notice the light came on and then I had your experience. |

I am pretty sure the X1 and S3 will be different, I might have gotten 10 miles from my S3 when the light came on. That was before I put a carb on, and now have a real reserve. |

install a small header tank inline with the fuel line? would bump up your miles |

i've gone 40 miles on my '95 s2, but i think its reserve comes on at ~4 gallons, which means there's about a gallon left in there, not the spec'd 0.6gal... doug s. |

On the S3 the light means you should have stopped for gas at the last gas station you passed. |

Lorin's correct, my light came on and 2 miles later it burped, farted, coughed and then died. |

On the S3 the light means you should have stopped for gas at the last gas station you passed. Now that's funny......and it's funny 'cause it's true!!! FWIW, it's easier to reset the odo on the S3 than it is the 1125. |

IAMike (or was it MikeE?) had short reserve issue on a Colorado trip we took a while back. The light came on, the next exit was a ways down the road. It was a neighborhood type exit.. He ran out of gas while going down a hill. As luck would have it, a station was at the bottom of the hill! I don't think we went even 10 miles when the light came on. |

Just go thrash it. That's BAD advice on '99 EFI Buells. The AFV can and will drive way up when run out of fuel. When refilled, they run wicked rich and thrashing will not reset the AFV (bike cannot reach closed loop). The plugs foul, and if it's the rear plug, then the O2 shows mega rich and the bike leans WAY out if the front cylinder is still going and the rider finally starts cruising. Like, Holy Pistons, Batman kind of lean. Regular cruising speeds and throttles after running out of fuel. Later DDFI's had the issue rectified. |

I recently ran out. The light came on on my 99 S3 on the freeway, left lane, above the legal limit. While I'm deciding how long I should be able to go, the decision was made when the engine started to die. I start rocking the bike to slosh any remaining fuel, waving my arm while heading for the shoulder. A guy in a pickup slots in behind me and runs interference all the way to shoulder. When we stopped on the should, even before I could practice my bad words vocabulary, he rolls down the window and says, "I'm guessing that you're out of gas." Turns out he's a freeway services guy and he pulls out a gas can and puts in a gallon while I remain sitting on the bike. |

The whole thing was such a total surprise I never asked. These freeway patrols are state funded here in CA since even a small obstruction on CA freeways can cause massive traffic delays. |

I always fill my tank (X1) before I hit the 120 mile mark. No reason to (intentionally) wait till the pump starts sucking all the crap at the bottom of the tank. |

I ran out of gas 3 times on a recent tour of Ireland on my 99 S3T. I started in Stuttgart Germany and went 2500 miles round trip in 5 days. All three times, when I noticed my light, I had less than 10 miles till I ran dry. I also agree that it ruins your O2 sensor, after 3 run outs, I needed new O2,ETS, and Fuel Filter. I have started to carry an extra can on long trips so I can fuel up a little as soon as I notice the light. |

My '99 S3T ran out at 18 miles. It was slow to restart, but ran fine. |

Oh yea, the real problem that surfaced was as soon as I noticed the fuel light, the road began a slight uphill grade. after about 1/2 mile of slight uphill, I ran dry because all my fuel was in the rear of the tank away from the pick up. It then sloshed forward and back again so the bike went through a period of poor scavenge effect and air sucked into the fuel system. This may have been a part of my poor running afterward. |

My S2, like doug_s's, had a huge reserve - nearly a gallon. I didn't like having that much "unused" gas in there, so I pulled the petcock one time when I had the tank off, disassembled it, and shortened the short straw (reserve feed). I got it to right about .4 gallons (and have a spare petcock on hand in case I boogered it). My S1W has been right around .4/.5 its whole life. Now, they're both close enough that I take my MPG and half it - there's my reserve range, and it's pretty much in line with my EFI bikes. And I haven't found a good place to keep my MSR bottle on the tubers (it lives in an operators tube on the Uly, under the right saddlebag). |

Well today I found out that it don't take long to run out. I was in the Poconos and the light came on, I usually reset my trip odometer at refueling so I know when I am close to running out. I should have got at least 10 more miles. Sat at the side of the road for 2 hours. |
