I know its been covered extensively here but I think Im on to something that may help some of you. I just got back from a 2600 mile trip on my 1125r. About 700 miles in I started missing 6th gear repeatedly. I happened to be at Gainesville HD and checked my oil level. It was just above the add mark. I decided to top it off. Mabey .25 or less of a qt. I did not have the problem again for about 1500 miles. I missed almost every 6th gear shift for about an hour. I checked it again and it was at the add mark. I added .25 qt and it was smooth again. I didnt miss a single shift the rest of the day. |

that sounds like your bike is consuming quite a bit of oil half a qt in 1500 miles? |

No that would be 1/2 qt in 3000 miles |

you had to add your second .25 qt at 1500 miles i bet if its concistant you would be .25 qt down when you got to the 2200 mile mark on your trip which works out to over .75 qt in 3000 miles |

How could adding .25 quarts of oil help a tranny???? Not saying its not true or didn't happen just wondering how could it help? maybe the oil level rises in the cases enough to reach the gear better?? |

I did not have the problem again for about 1500 miles. for about 1500 miles, not at 1500 miles. I did my 600 mile service and the bike now has 3496 miles. I have since added a total of 1/2 quart of oil. 2600 were last week. |

sorry to throw your thread off track but with that oil consumption i think you might have bigger issues than a false neutral |

Illbuell, I have no idea. I just know it did work. Its not my imagination. |

sorry to throw your thread off track but with that oil consumption i think you might have bigger issues than a false neutral For a bike that is barely even broken in I dont see an issue. Its not like I rode it nice. I consumed the least amount of oil of the group I was traveling with. I took the same trip last year and my buddys gixxer had just over 1000 miles on it. He also burned 1/2 a quart on our trip. If your not consuming any oil on a bike thats not broke in I would be concerned that your not checking it properly. |

I owned a lot of bikes and when run hard they all used oil. My truck uses oil when I run it really hard but uses 0 in the last 20k miles. |

my appoligys I forgot to convert that much in 3000 miles isn't to bad that much oil in 3000 km is quite excessive |

Is the transmission connected with the engine oil in any way? I don't think so. Perhaps there's a secondary impact of adding oil. For example - neutral sensor fails at high temperature, extra oil brings down ambient temperature at sensor, sensor stops failing..... I'm just making this up, but I'll bet that someone here can figure out what's really going on. |

Is the transmission connected with the engine oil in any way? I don't think so. they most deffinatly are they share the same casting, oil, oil pump ect ect they are not like the HD motors that have a seporate trans |

Just to be clear false neutral may not be the correct term. When I shift from 5th to 6th it says 2nd on the cluster and the engine is not connected to the back wheel. The neutral light does not come on. |

the engine is not connected to the back wheel I must be missing something here where in the previous posts has any one said anything about the rear wheel your gear indicator has absolutly zero to do with the rear wheel yes your engine and transmition are directly conected |

I think he meant "it feels like" the engine is not connected to the back wheel... as it it feels as though it's in neutral or that the clutch is in.. It never occurred ti me that some people might not realise this 1125 shares the oil between the engine and gearbox.. I guess that's the drawback of never having owned a Harley, I just assume everyone knows that, it's been pretty much the norm on the vast majority of bikes for 30+ years.. |

False neutral is when you get a "engine and final drive not connected" situation between gears that there shouldn't be a neutral between - in this case, between 5 and 6, it can "hang" in a position where neither is engaged. It's a side effect of sequential shifters. ... Harleys don't share oil between the engine and transmission? They're definitely in the minority, then. Most bikes are hell on oil because the transmission gears subject engine oil to loads it wasn't designed for. |

Correct. All air cooled Buell's are like this. |

My 1125CR has hit some false neutrals 5-6, I tend to shift softly so I've blamed it on myself and just remembered to be firmer on 5-6. Definitely is a tendency of this bike/transmission though. Oil level and type certainly can make a difference, as it affects the overall drag on the transmission. I've had bikes where I could tell that it was getting low on oil (near the "add" mark, not below service level), because the transmission would feel and shift slightly differently, sometimes drop into first a little clunkier. It doesn't take much, people are pretty sensitive to inputs like these. KeS |

The sportsters and air cooled buells have engine oil apart from tranny oil. The big twins are worse yet...they have engine oil, tranny oil, and primary/clutch oil. Lots of bikes were like that until unit construction came along where the engine and tranny were in the same casting. Harley is just hanging on it's roots. Every other brand of bike I owned has been shared engine/tranny oil...including the Super X. |

I can tell when my FZ is getting ready for an oil change when the shifting becomes finicky. If (!IF!) an oil level on the low side has an effect on the oiling of the transmission it could exhibit this symptom. Does your bike fall within those effected by the 5th gear recall?? If so has that been rectified? I seem to recall that had something to do with an oil jet not lubricating the trans properly leading to potential trans damage. |

I believe the 5th gear problem only happened at high speed, and involved the rear wheel locking up. Actually, I don't think it ever happened to anybody, but the possibility was there. |

wouldn't that be fun rolling 100+ mph and your tranny lets go cause of the 5th gear locking up the rear tire thanks but I think I will pass |
