I would like to get a used Ulysses this spring. I now most of the differences between the 06 and 08 models. Is there a big difference between the 06 and 08 that would cause you to buy one over the other? I've been looking on cycletrader and there are quite a few with the full luggage and they are only asking in the $7000.00 range. is this price pretty good? Most of them are 10k and under for miles. I owned an 04 XB12S for about 4 years and absolutely love the Buell line of bikes. After owning the Lightning I had a few Yamaha Warriors, and a Victory Hammer. Cruisers are not for me that's the conclusion I came to. Test drove the Ulysses and I can't get it out of my mind!!! I've always received great feedback on this site and all the work on my bike I did myself I learned most of it on this board. |

I have not had experience with a pre-08 bike but the last person to ask this same question the maority answer was to buy the newest one you can afford. You really can not go wrong though as it seems every year has its ups and downs. Find one you like and ride the crap out of it! Check the classifieds here too as there are a few on there. Good luck |

This question pops up once in a while, the answer is to buy the newest you can afford. Personally I wouldn't go for a 06, as it was the first year and had the most teething issues, and the upgrades on the 08's are nice. Being that you had an 04, think of the 06 being similar in how its rough and raw, and the 08 being quite a bit different. |

I have a 2008 XT and I have ridden a 2006 on several occasions. I think the per-08's tend to run hotter. I know the 06 I rode was a lot warmer on the legs than my 08 pre-comfort kit. The comfort kit I think is a must. The 08 seems more stable suspension wise to me too |

On the other hand prhaps as a collectors item the earlst yu can get the better, particularly if it has a very low Mnfct. #. Disclaimer I haave an 06. If it were me I would get an 07, seems like there is more that can be done with the ECMSPY etc Nevermind I was planningn on trading in my 06 on a 10 at the end of this summer. |

thanks for the input. After I posted I seen a link that sent me directly to a post that broke out all the differences. The 08 does seem very appealing as it had the most changes. I test drove the 09 and it was very smooth but they had assembled it in a hurry and hadn't tuned it and it ran like crap. Gotta get out there and test drive one that's put together correctly! They wanted 13,500 for the brand new 09 police addition bike last year. |

It may not have been assembly that is making it run hard. Some dealers liked to fire up the bike and blurp it a few times so potential customers can hear it run. Very bad for the plugs and can cause it to run rough until you get some good miles or do a plug cleaning. |

Well...seems you mostly answered your own question. Taking nothing away from the 06/07 models the 08 had about 10 or more upgrades from: bigger forks, prog springs, 74* sweep, larger oil cooler, bigger crank, higher redline, etc. The only downside of the newer version is inability to play with ECM with spy. If you get an 08 & up year, put in comfort kit hardware but DO NOT get the ECM download until you've had a chance to consider all it's consequences. There is no going back once you've made decision & it's unnecessary in my view...& undesirable in many others views. Good luck. j |

And because the 08+ bikes don't suck, it is non-issue. You can still read and clear the trouble codes with ECMspy. Get a Race ECM if you want to do tuning.

There are 0 consequences, the fan runs less, and the updated fuel mapping will remove any drivaibilty issues you may of had. |

Bueller...my 09 lost some "grunt" albeit runs smoother. Fan does not run at stop signs (when I think it should) but runs all the time on the highway (when I think it should not and would rather just hear the thumper. I would like to go back...want to trade ECM's? |

Eulysses, I have pretty significant heat on my right knee/thigh even with the Comfort Kit at only 75 degrees! Several suggested using insulation/tape on the openings between the seat and frame but others suggested that the re-flash would solve the problem. They also said that there were 'no' negatives to the re-flash in regards to power, that it just changed the fan operation. Are you feeling any heat in Yuma? Temps? Ths. BTW, I got my lowers installed and they really seem to do the trick in regards to buffeting. Ths. (Message edited by buellerxt on February 09, 2010) |

Bueller...my Memphis are not really tall enough or big shield too far up and out...needing bigger shades. I am riding right now with the update to ECM but no comfort kit yet. Gets hot with the shorts on for sure! Waiting to put kit on when summer comes. Like the heat...rather my wife likes the heat. Sorry so relative an answer...nothing to go on. But can't imagine your bike being unbearable anymore with comfort kit. The 06 and 07 guys are very happy with improvement of Comfort kit and they don't get an ECM upgrade. |

Eulysses, it's definitely not unbearable but it's hotter than any bike I've owned and very noticeable. I'll try some insulation. My Memphis Shades seem to be working well with the Buell tall shield. I don't want or need anything larger. |

Could the lowers be interfering with the air flow over the engine? I know that was an issue with chaps/lowers on my HD's. |

That's a good question, Itileman. I plan to check that out this Spring. I hope not because I like the effects of the 'lowers' but I have a suspicion they might be altering airflow enough to make a difference. The lowers are an inch or more above the intakes but could be effecting air flow. |

well I'm used to the hot leg feeling from my 04 Lightning. Doesn't bother me to much where I live. Except when it's above 90 is all. Still on the lookout for a Ulysses |

I installed the comfort kit shortly after purchasing my bike in late October. I can tell you that my bike is hotter now, and I did not have the "flash". I can actually hear the fuel boiling now and I could not prior to the CK install. Fuel drips onto floor, and vaporizes all the while you are riding. I am considering removing the CK, but then again maybe the re-flash will lower temps. I don't think I can stand the howling all the time while riding.. I'm with "Eulysses" on this one.. |

I had the ECM flash done and I don't hear any "howling". The fan runs slow enough that it's not blasting any noise. AFAICT, the scoop and the other pieces of plastic will only SLOW DOWN the air flow. That's heat build-up. I trust(ed) the Buell engineers and they wrote instructions that clearly say "flash the ECM" when installing the kit. I think it's foolish to restrict the air-flow (with the kit) and NOT compensate for that (with the fan). I say get the flash, trust the engineers. |

Hey Froggy, "Only about 100 2010 Ulys were built"? I have just put a deposit down on what I am told is "the last batch of Buells to leave the factory". Apparently, there is a ship with a crate loaded with Buells heading across the Atlantic to UK as I type, it is due to dock "within the next week or so". I am told my XT will come with everything installed regarding the Comfort Kit, so I'll be letting you know as soon as it lands! By the way, this will be my second Uly!!! |

There was an 06 listed on Craigslist in Riverside, CA for $4800 a couple of weeks ago with 10K and no bags. It had been tipped over but looked to be in great shape otherwise. |

I did a bunch of research into the differences between the 06-08 model ulysses (the year range I'm looking at) and the 2008 model is the bike I'm going for. With the upgrades to the bike they do feel quite a bit different. I don't plan on heavy mods so i think it fits me well. |

2008 would be a nice choice...but back to the heat thing for a sec here...I am riding almost daily here in AZ and have lower wind screens, ECM update and no CK installed yet. Riding in shorts (I know..I know...) and always did since last summer when I got the 09. I will say it is just a freekin hot...boiling fuel and all and am looking forward to gaining some comfort with the kit. There are long threads in BadWeb on the kit and weather the engineers were wrong but all you hear is positive results. I am hoping the kit cuts the fan at speed...I do hear it with all the road noise because I have a big wind shield which cuts air noise. BTW...it is no less or more hotter (relative I know) with wind re-directions than without. Same. But an interesting thought to be careful of. |
