I picked up a used clear tall Uly windscreen and it has the two top grommet 'studs' but is missing the two bottom ones. I tried swapping in the two bottom ones from my '07 XB12X short stock (I think stock) screen but their heads are much smaller in diameter and their depth seems inadequate to securely hold the taller screen. There was a lot more play than I was comfortable with. Does the screen need to be grommet mounted or can I bolt-mount the bottom of the screen to the flyscreen and just use the top grommets as designed? (Message edited by 7873jake on December 05, 2009) |

The tall wind shield had a recall because it flies off at speed and could possibly smack the rider in the face! the bottom holes are meant to be bolted to the fly screen to prevent this from happening. No doubt Froggy has or knows the part numbers for the recall/upgrade for the xt windshield install kit. |

I'd just make a run to the hardware store and grab some stainless bolts/washers/lock nuts and throw them on there. But if you prefer the OEM look, you can certainly go to a dealership (or call a sponsoring dealership) and order the two windshield bolts. |

The grommets are one of the things I didn't think were that appealing, not that they detracted from anything, and after I saw what it took to make the little shield come off, I was worried about the big shield and the grommets. Methinks I will visit the hardware aisle of a couple of local places to see what options exist. This list alone makes me regret having not bought sooner...like YEARS ago! |

Here's the updated ("recall") tall shield setup. The washers are dimpled for a countersunk head; there is a spacer that goes inside the rubber grommet; the nut is a nylock.

Sorry for the delayed response...been out of the country. If its part of a recall, what exactly does that mean for me as the 2nd owner of an '07? |

The recall was only on XT and XP bikes, that came with the tall shield from the factory. Or, if an X had the tall shield SWR'd with the bike new, as dealer-installed. Any over the counter kits were supposed to have a recall kit put in/with them if they didn't already have one, and later kits were all boxed with the recall parts. Unfortunately with a used shield.... The recall kit is cheap, though. I don't have the part number for the whole kit handy but I think it was a whopping $12 or something. |

That's what I figured. And a whopping $12 tacked on to a comfort kit (what? its still hot down here in central Florida!) tomorrow or the next day surely won't upset the DW. <fingers crossed> (Message edited by 7873jake on December 11, 2009) |

Yeah, don't use the stud/grommet arrangement from the short screen. I got away with that for quite a while with my Zero Gravity, but it eventually flew off and hit me in the face one night on the interstate. |
