Do I need a spring compressor to change out the fork oil in my XB? I have never needed one for any of my rice burners as I have always set the preload soft and just pushed the cap down and rethreaded it carefully, but I saw a couple of posts about using one so thoughtI would ask before I took it apart

Don't know exactly about the XB, but I've generally had the same experience as you; make sure you take the weight completely off the front wheel (front end lift under the steering head or straps over the rafters), dial down the preload and just be careful.

Hopefully someone with XB specific info will chime in.

On the spring compressor note - I bought a compressor gadget from Traxxion Dynamics, but it's purpose is really just to compress the spring so you can remove the clips that hold the spring in place. No need for that for just an oil change.

Actually, to properly change the fork oil on any Buell model with inverted forks, you do need to compress the fork spring to remove the fork cap from the damper rod assembly. You may be able to pour out oil by not doing this, but you need to attach an extension to the damper rod to pump out the oil in the damper components. Need to do this on any fork leg that has a damper rod (like FL models on the left side from 2001 to 2005, except Road Kings).

Henrik's compressor gadget is good for disassembly to get to the damper rod. You'll need something (or someone) to hold the fork leg to do this.

Working on 06 Uly forks spring change. Top cap will not budge. Tried heat, air wrench,impact driver and cheater bar. Now we have a mess. The top cap now looks like a metal hemorrhoid. Even tried a punch. So far we have not damaged anything but the cap and we probably fried the O-rings. any help would sure be appreciated. We are running out of metal to work with. PLEASE HELP US!!!!

Actually we had it out of the triple trees, we didn't have a lot of room so we took it out and had it in a clamp. The left side one was tight and had to use an impact wrench to loosen it up. The right side one we haven't even been able to move an .0001 in. either direction. We may end up having to drill it out without toasting anything else hopefully.
