I want to put some serious hand guards on my Uly. Can anyone tell me what fits?

I think the guy from Florida that did the TAT on a Uly recently had retrofitted Barkbusters. He gives specifics in his post. Do a search for 'Uly on the TAT' on ADVrider or BWB. Good luck

If you want to get rid of your stock handguards let me know, I just bought an XB12XP and it has none. I just need the plastic and bolts, not the mounting brackets.

As it turns out, Google is my friend. Here's what I found:

http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/3 870/474/ (Barkbusters VPS guards)

http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/4 873/ (Barkbusters Storm guards)

Both use the BB.BSC.STD mounting kit. Here's what they look like installed:

http://tat09.blogspot.com/2009/07/buell-ulysses-ha nd-guard-upgrade.html

I'm going to order the Storm plastics since the weather's getting colder.

Sorry, Blasterd, but I'm shopping around because my stock ones are broken.

I have a pair of Barkbusters but I need to get the mount for the inside of the bar, and a new set of plastic. I kinda wanted the stock guards though.

Blasterd, it shouldn't run you more than $40-50 or so:

Thanks Sanchez... I just dumped my Uly and the right hand guard was torn up, as well as losing the handle bar-end in the mud. I didn't know Bark-Busters were available for the Uly. Come pay day I'll have a set of them ordered.

The factory guards are barely adequate for wind protection, much less for any sort of impact.

Big thumbs up for twistedthrottle.com! Not only do I appreciate the extra effort they took in posting pictures and videos of the install process, but they shipped quickly too. My package went out two hours after I submitted it, and I had it in hand 3 days later.

Ordered mine yesterday and they shipped the same afternoon. I got the storm guards, hope they protect from the cold a bit better.

Sanchez...which shield did you get? The VPS with extra windscreen? Do you have your product #'s handy?

I got the Storm guards.

BB.BHG6.SBK Barkbusters VPS handguard with full-wrap aluminum backbone and variable-height wind deflector (mounting kit sold separately) $60.00
BB.BHG5 Barkbusters VPS aluminum bar set (includes left and right) $0.00
BB.S3.BK Barkbusters "Storm" plastic guard set $0.00
BB.BSC.STD Barkbusters mounting kit for 7/8" (22mm) hollow-tube steel handlebars $31.50

It showed up as 4 items in the order confirmation, but the BB.BSC.STD mounting kit was the only thing I had to select from the pulldown menu.

Thanks Sanchez. Nice job. Are the Storm ones really any bigger than the others with the added screen?

Anyone know if it's possible to fit "real" handguards and still keep the HVMP bar-ends?

That is, has anyone done it?

Thanks.

Dr. Greg, if the end of the "real" handguard was drilled for 5/16" you could probably slip the handguard over the bolt. You could probably cut the rubber tubing a bit on the bar end to make a little more wiggle room to accomodate the barkbuster.

That's what the product literature says. I don't have a VPS to do a side by side comparison with the Storm, though.

> Anyone know if it's possible to fit "real" handguards and still keep the HVMP bar-ends?

Yeah, it will work. The bolt diameter is the same, and the HVMP bolt has some extra length to it. You'd just mount the BBs with the HVMP rubber tube in the bar instead of using the BB tapered cone/metal sleeve system.

If you want to stick with the BB system inside the bar, you'd need a different bolt because the HVMP thread pitch is different.

Ok, this was really easy. Here's the kit:

The allen heads are 5mm, and the nuts are 10mm. The Storm plastics are significantly larger than the factory guards:

Here are some shots of the mounting. I had to remove the factory zip ties that hold the wiring bundles to the bars.

And the finished product:

Let us know what you think after riding with them. I think I found my next upgrade. Still interested in the bar ends working with them too.

I am officially pleased. I was riding down the interstate this evening wishing my electric jacket would go up one more notch and regretting that I hadn't tucked my jeans into my boots, when I realized my hands weren't cold. I'd forgotten to even turn on the heated grips. Cool.

Haha, I wondered if anyone would notice that. It was part of my halloween costume that wouldn't fit in my luggage.

The sword or the guards? : D
