I drove through a couple of hundred miles of rain and the rear made CLACK ing sounds when I got close to home. I just got the wheel off and confirmed that both sides are junk and full of water. I can't spin them with my thumb. The axle is OK so I just completely lucked out on where it chose to happen. The front is probably bad too. I'll check it out later. Now is not that time. (Orange seals, by the way) |

Good reason to get the 2010 updated rear wheel assembly. |

Glad you made it home. What are you going to replace them with, and, are you going to change the fronts too? |

Make sure you get a wheel spacer when you buy bearings. $12 part. |

I am now going to pull the seal back and inject some grease in my wheel bearings as preventative maintenance. Does anyone know what grease is best to mix whats left of the factory grease? Will regular moly bearing grease be alright? |

I don't need to replace anything other than the bearings. I looked over the axle and they didn't spin. The sound that they made happened like .3333 miles from home! Pretty damn lucky! no excuse to get the whole wheel and axle replaced unless they do it under warantee like that. My guess that they will install the newer black bearings. I am worrying about the fronts now though. after all, they have the same amount of water blasting past them, right? |

I am worrying about the fronts now though. after all, they have the same amount of water blasting past them, right? Even more, and also less. The front open hub allows contaminants to get at the backsides of the bearings, but at least nothing stays trapped in there. But that's just my uneducated observation. |

Welcome to the club. It's not all that exclusive sad to say. The fronts don't seem to be as prone to failure. If I had to venture a guess as to why I would say that the open hub prevents moisture buildup on the back sides of the bearings so no rust builds up and lifts the seals on the back side. That said, I just replaced my front bearings, one was rough and notchy the other still OK. Red/Orange seals.... |

The fronts do not have the problem that seems to plague the rears. They don't have an enclosed cavity behind them, so they don't retain water, and they don't have to deal with the belt tension pulling on them. |
