I've used the search engine an didn't find anything. If I've overlooked a thread please point me in the right direction. I just rode from Arkansas to Washington state. About 500 miles into the 2nd day my 08XT started cutting out like someone was turning the kill switch on and off. I pulled in and gassed up and it stopped cutting out for about 30 miles and then started missing again. I pulled over and let it cool until the fan quit and turned the ignition on and off 3 times and let it cycle through the ignition sequence each time. Then I turned off the kill switch an repeated the 3 cycles. It ran fine till the end of the day. The next day it ran fine for 2 tankfuls and then started missing again. I repeated the switch sequence and stopped missing. Does anyone have any idea whats causing this? |

check that your battery and ground connections are tight. |

Joenuclear, Similar issue with my 08 ~3500 miles. I took it to the shop last Tuesday 5-12-09. Was told on Saturday that they were waiting for an answer from Buell. I will post results when known. Woodreaux |

Sounds like the main ground point from the negative terminal to the frame. Check it NOW because it can cause you grief, DAMHIK. |

I was able to get to the negative battery cable last night. It had been assembled with dielectric grease but while I was in there I scuffed all the surfaces with fine sandpaper and reapplied fresh dielectric grease. I haven't had a repeat of the ignition cutting out but I haven't ridden more than 20 minutes at a time since I got to the Tri-Cities. After looking for tips here in the forum I believe my started hesitating may also be related to grounding issues. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where else I might chase the grounding gremlins? Thanks. |

Dude, don't be putting dielectric grease where the metal of one contact touches the metal of its mate. It's called di-electric for a reason: it can make an insulator out of a conductor. If you must use the stuff, apply it to the outsides after making a secure electrical connection to keep water and other contaminants out. |

Dude, I reapplied the dielectric where it was applied by the factory under the tutelage of an electrical engineer. I'm just looking for input on other grounding points to maintain. BTW, Nice 1125. |

Joe, If you remove the batt box and clean the mounts... There's grounds to clean on the neck...Swap relays around... But grounding doesn't sound to me like your problem. If you have an '08, it seems like a ground problem would be kinda premature unless you wash your XT in salt water. Are they still putting in battery terminal bolts that are too long? Too bad ya didn't check the riders assistance part of this site. I just now saw this thread and am in hermiston, just south of you. I'm leaving for a week in the morning so won't be of much help now. |

Things that can interrupt ignition besides intermittent wiring issues could be a defective Bank Angle Sensor, Cam Position Sensor, ECM or sidestand switch. I believe the first three should leave an error code to facilitate troubleshooting if the Check Engine light shows during the fault episode. A defective sidestand switch won't however. Did the Check Engine come on at any time? |

"I believe the first three should leave an error code to facilitate troubleshooting if the Check Engine light shows during the fault episode. A defective sidestand switch won't however. Did the Check Engine come on at any time?" The check engine light did not come on when the ignition is cutting out. The only time it comes on is if I start the bike as soon as I turn on the ignition switch. When I do that the speedometer doesn't work and a few minutes later the check engine light comes on.

I appreciate all the responses. I'll keep trying your suggestions one at a time and hopefully it will get the Uly running 100%. My GF flies to Washington state Friday and we're going to ride back through Yellowstone and a few other places we both want to see. Even if the problem reoccurs I think I can fall back on the work around by cycling the switch. |

When it rains it pours.... Giving the bike the once over I noticed my drive belt cut about a third of the way across. No problem, I rode to the local H-D dealer and explained it to the service writer. he said the Service Manager would need to take a look at it before he could write it up. An hour later the manager says I'll need to pay for the belt and the work and they will send the belt to Buell to see if it was a manufacturing defect. If Buell determines it to not be a defect then he will keep my money. WTF? I call my local dealer who quotes page 43 of the H-D/Buell global warranty and says road hazards are covered. I explain this to the manager and he rolls his eyes at me. My local dealer service manager calls me and says he will call and tell the manager that if H-D doesn't cover the repair then his shop will. Once again Cycle-Connection of Joplin Mo. has gone above and beyond for me! I had to pay $30 to get the part expedited and I'll have to wait to see if this service manager comes through for me but I guess thats part of being on the road. |

A little sunshine in the rain... another dealer goes to bat for the redheaded child..... good dealers are so worth the extra effort of riding past the crappy ones a few more miles.... joe- for what its worth... I thought I was going through the same thing as you and just had the Uly in my dealer yesterday... and my problem seems to be the O2 sensor.... hadn't seen that posted here yet... but I did have engine light come on when poor performing... (missing... too rich) Cheers-pete |

Bumping an older thread... I've been having this same issue for a few weeks now. I'm going to double check my battery ground & maybe add a washer or 2 to the ground terminal bolt. |
