I've selected the Uly as my next bike for everyday commuting, some small weekend trips and a cross country trip schedule in the near future. Unfortunately I'm in Yuma, AZ and the nearest Buell dealer is 3 hours away in the Phoenix area. Is it wise to ride home from the dealer which includes stretches of 75mph roads or is it better to trailer it down and do the recommended breaking in at my location?

When I bought my 06 Uly, I didn't of course have any say in how it was broke in (by the book according to the seller) and it's an oil hog. If I had my way, I'd do the Motoman break in. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Oh yeah, do it soon. I remember it getting pretty dang hot there starting in April. I was stationed there from 89 to 95 with VMA 513.

I rode mine back to Fartesia from Albuquerque in October and didn't baby it. It's fine. Ride it home.

But if you can't vary your speed, vary your gear...

I picked my new '09 up in northwest Phoenix, and rode it back home to Tucson in late February. I believe Yuma's little further away from Phoenix than Tucson is, but I took the scenic route back, and so added a bunch of extra miles.

Like RWVEN said, if you can't vary your speed, vary your RPMs with gear changes. The 2009 models say the break-in RPMs are up to 4000 for the first 50 miles, and up to 5000 RPM for the next 450 miles. That's almost a Motoman break-in all by itself. Don't spend a lot of time at low RPMs, though, if you can help it. I tried to keep mine between 3500 and 5000 on the ride back. No problems now. Then again, I'm only at 4300 miles so far, so it's not like I've got a lot of long term experience on this Uly, yet. Sure do like it, though.

Good luck, and enjoy!
