ALL brackets must be in place. Even though they are individual pieces they distribute the load to the members with the proper load bearing capacity.

Be mindful that the rear foot peg supports are a key structural element for support of the tail box.

It's not a guess.

Re: widowmaker's solution of mounting the Givi box on the triple tail.

IMHO, the triple tail's primary use is for a backrest for a pillion passenger. Now how many of us have carried a pillion? Pillions come in w wide range of sizes and weights and they are a LOT heavier than the 11lbs max. specified by Buell. How many of us have gotten a little "enthusiastic" with your right hand while carrying a pillion? It's my guess that the majority of our pillions have rested their not inconsiderable) against the backrest?

I think widowmakers solution is entirely viable!

I don't want to have to worry about the weight. If we are voting, I'm with Court. Given the engineering marvel that is the Uly, I'm totally inclined to believe that the Buell engineers know what we should be doing or not at the extremities of the bike.

Like sprintex I just want to mount the OEM top rack. I have no use for the top case, but I'd like to be able to strap on some camping gear when two up does not leave any room for gear on the seat.

I'm grateful that Palmer is making stuff for the Uly. I wish them great success, but that rack looks like it would prevent some tall vehicle drivers (like say, those driving trucks) from being able to see the brake/tail light.

I already have the side cases and that hardware, I just need to get the top rack and either install it or have it installed. That is my plan.

Just for the record, although I think widowmaker's solution is within the Buell weight capacity, (there is always a comfortable tolerance with these things), I have a Fehling rack on my Uly.

I have picked up a set of OEM pannier racks,(Side cases)and was curious as to what size the footpeg support bolt is?and how do you run a tailbag rack in conjunction with them,as I have a Ventura system not the Buell topbox,as they are so freakin expensive here in Oz,I am also trying to see if I can get some sidecases as well,but at the moment they will support my soft throw-over bags.

A passenger sits over a foot forward on the tail compared to the top box. In my mind, without going out in the rain with a tape measure, that's likely 1/3 the length of the total tail section.

Put something on a butter knife (a pea, say) at the end, and 'boing' flip it off. Now, put it a third of the way down the knife (include the handle in your total measurement and make it 1/3 of that) and flip it again. Harder, isn't it?

The Uly tail is designed to carry passenger weight on the SEAT.

Now how many of us have carried a pillion?

I bet none of us have had one sit on the triple tail when it's in the luggage rack position, over the taillight. THAT's the weight limit they're talking about. The Uly tail is designed to carry no more than 11 lbs BEHIND the seat, over the taillight, on the triple tail.

The supports for side cases triangulate (even though they're not triangles) the tail support so the point at the tripletail is connected directly to a) the front of the tail section where it meets the frame, and b) the passenger footpeg mounts. Triangulation is a common engineering component and will greatly reduce flex, and strengthen the entire assembly.

As noted above - Buell engineers *know* what they're doing.

The Outdoorsman, in my opinion, obscures the view of the tail/brake light so I am going to add the Whelan TIR for visibility.

Mine's no worse than other aftermarket carriers in terms of viewing from a greater height plus I've been working on an auxillary light that can be attached on the top side of any luggage being carried.
It's a valid point about visibility but that also applies to indicators when a bike is fully loaded.
Here's Touratech's carrier and see how far the top case is positioned back from the bike:

Looks cool ! . . . . I think with the luggage the Ulysses, at least here in New York City, begs for auxiliary rear lighting.

What do those Tour-Tech bags weigh?

Don't know the weight but don't like them - doesn't suit the Ulysses in my opinion.
Better on something more agricultural looking!

thinking of building my own racks when i get the uly home. i kinda like the caribou concept having used pelican and hardigg cases for sound equipment for years, but it's just a little too utilitarian. i'm not a fan of topcases, but have never run a bike with anything but leather bags so that might be part of it. anyway, here's what i'm thinking for side cases:

thanks longdog, but had hard leather bags on my 01 sportster and didn't care for the maintenance they needed. also, i'd probably be laughed off of badweb if i installed something like that. =)
