For better or worse, I anti-sieze them. I would much rather have them come out too easy then have them snap off. |

today; finished wiring the front signals, de-grimed the front caliper, removed the front reflectors, gave the rocker covers a once over with some steel wool, and gave her another general wash. looking pretty good! before; after; things left to do; (in no particular order.) install exhaust studs. get exhaust pipe finished. (at the welder.) re-pack muffler. replace front tire. change fluids/filter. change spark plugs/wires. repair oil sender wire. inspect OPDG/replace if needed. wash/buff/wax bodywork. service front forks. cut license bracket plastic thingy. install rear signals. install head breather kit. adjust primary/clutch. properly adjust drive belt tension. replace intake seals. touch up black engine paint. touch up black paint on rear pulley. change brake fluid. inspect "clicking" sound at output pulley! (noticed when i was pushing it into the garage.) anything i am forgetting/not thinking of? |

Sleez, looking great. That clicking noise you are hearing may be this: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=3842&post=181560#POST181560 Not great but fixable Take the belt off the pully and spin it by hand. It could also be the wheel bearings but if it is coming from the pully the it is probably the bearings in there. |

i got the pipe and muffler back today. looks pretty good. i decided to experiment with a packing method i discovered online somewhere... stay posted! here is the repaired collector outlet; the new stub in the muffler inlet end; the perf tube prior to wrapping; beginning to wrap perf tube: yes that is rope, stove rope! good to 1000 deg!!! i stumbled onto this method while researching packing materials. very easy. i used some SS wire to secure one end, then started wrapping tightly. i got enough to do two layers.... almost. i wrapped all the way in one direction, then secured that end with some SS wire then doubled back to the beginning, then secured the end with some more SS wire. came up just a bit short, but close enough. took 34 feet. beginning; double wrapped; then i wrapped the ceramic packing around this, took a couple trial and fit attempts to get just the right amount to allow me to be able to slide the whole thing in without having excess space. it was a bit tricky to get the perf tube to align with the outlet stub, i used a wooden baseball bat handle to lever it over close, while Gloriann tapped the perf tube with a hammer to get it to begin sliding over the outlet stub. then i pushed it the rest of the way in by hand. partly inserted; fully stuffed; now i just need to apply some red RTV to the inside of the end cap and slide it on, and rivet it up!! pretty happy with just a bit of frustration. wear gloves!!!! even though the packing is ceramic and basalt, it is still little fibers that get in your skin!!! next i'll start the polishing!! |

Sleez, looking great. I have a stupid question. What is SS wire? While I was working on the S1 today I wanted so much to pull the race muffler off the S2 to see how it looks inside but I need to finish the S1 first. I got the packing from Al and the first thing I noticed is it did not seem like it would fill the pipe. The rope idea is great. New front isolator Stress bar (forgot the name of it) Different handle bars XB blinkers re-jet carb etc etc. Frank |

Lovedabueller; i am not sure on the ecm type ignition module. i wondered that myself. i assume it started in 99 when the other tubers were all FI. not sure if this ecm is different than the FI ones, or just doesn't use the FI portion??? F_skinner; SS wire= stainless steel wire, just like safety wire, i couldn't locate my roll in the garage so i got a small roll at the local true value for a couple bucks. the rope didn't turn out as cheap as i hoped, it was 1.49 per foot, probably get it online cheaper by the foot. i'd recommend getting 36 feet or so. i think it was about 3/8", not that the diam matters too much. |

Keith, It's plug and play with our tubers. AFAIK, it's really just raising the rev limiter to 6800RPM. Frank, Stenzel bar. =) I have one...Those things took forever to get here lemme tell ya. 5 weeks! |

2002 m2 ecm was different than the rest. It might include the 2001 model year too, but im unsure on that. |

Nice, So far so good i like your welder's work very good. It looks amazing in the sun. AHH i haven't had my bike for the last week, and it reminds me of staring at my x1 in the sun just begging to go for a ride while i am working!! Man i love to sit and look at these tubers!! |

so to answer Keiths question those wont work on our 2000 bikes. The good news is if you google ignition modules for sportsters you can find all kinds of aftermarket ones that will probably do what ever it is you are trying to accomplish by changing it. |

F_skinner: if i ignore it, it will go away! seriously though, it started raining the next day, so i haven't pulled her out of the garage since then. but it did not sound metallic, it sounded more plastic... maybe the belt walking to the edge of the pulley and rubbing the belt cover... i hope! or one of the many zip ties that i've seen on this bike, with dangly tails! i hate dangly tails on my zip ties, i always cut them flush. the more i thought about it, i hadn't noticed any bad sounds previously, and i have rolled it in and out of the garage a few times as well as in and out of the truck when i picked it up, so i am hoping it's nothing major. i'll check it out the next time i have her out. the next thing i need to do is mock up the exhaust so i can mark the clocking for the hooks i will have the welder put on for the springs. thanks for the kind words so far everyone. |

I'm tuning in way late but what you've got going looks great! I would have lost my mind trying to stuff the wrapped perf back in the can. I'm curious how much experience you brought into this rebuild. Have you done this stuff before or did you just decide one day what's too lose? With the sun shining it must be killing ya to see it so close. |

2dflyer; i have had a buell since 98, and have done the majority of maintenance myself, so i have some experience. i have since bought 3 others before getting this M2. the main goal has been to get a bike for Gloriann (my girlfriend) to move up to from the blast she has ridden for over a year, we were looking for a CityX, and i found this M2, and had to jump on it! if it works out and she likes it, and can handle the power, we'll sell the blast... maybe... unless i decide to put the motor in an XB frame!!!??? or if she doesn't like/ can't ride the M2 we will sell it.. after i get my few rides of course! the S3 had a major engine issue and has since been torn completely down to the frame, then it was put into boxes and sits in the corner of the garage awaiting my return. life and things got in the way of finishing it for now... i do have a 1250 kit with stage 2 heads and a new crankshaft and cams to go back in it however. i have also worked on a race team... of sorts... dirt stock cars that my uncle drove, and i got a lot of "trial by fire" experience with wrenching on just about anything... never scared of tearing something apart, it's in my blood. and the corps has infused this attitude of cleaning and polishing and preventative maintenance that will stay with me forever. |

the guy did a bang up job on the pipe and it looks like that packing is going to last forever. also, my daughter didn't have any problems riding the low. she had gotten quite comfortable with it. plus the fact that i think that buells are pretty much the most rider friendly bikes out there helped. i don't know how many times i thought the bike was gonna slip out from under me and it just straightened itself right back up. so hopefully, you won't ever have to think about selling it. |

Sleez I like the idea of the rope, that looks like it'll take some abuse. I'll definately keep that in mind for the future. Now that I'm back from Ill. I can get started on my "pile" this weekend. I 've got some catching up to do to get as far along as you. |

thanks guys, yesterday i started polishing the pipe, spent 1 hr so far, here's the progress with the first phase; going to take some massaging around the collector, but it will come out nice, i'm sure. i also got a nice care package of parts from Tripp, thanks! got my exhaust studs, breather manifold kit, some well nuts for the bodywork, carb screws, and the race shoe. today i picked up some stuff to finish the breather, a syringe at the Vet Hosp to bleed the brakes, some paint for the starter and engine, and some epoxy to seal up the extra holes in the air cleaner backing plate. wait until you see my idea for the breather tank, should work out good. |

>>>going to take some massaging around the collector Get some latex gloves . . . a jar of that Mother's chrome wheel polish and go at it . . . Remember to read and follow torque specs on those header nuts . . . . put'em on . . run it for a while and re-torque. At this point you're looking smarter than all of us . . . don't let me down.

court; there are a few fairly deep scratches that are going to require a bit more aggressive approach, i'll use my dremel with a sanding drum to clean it up before attacking it with the sandpaper phase. i am sanding the whole pipe with 320 grit, then will move to 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500 then 2000. i'll hit it with the mother's after that. i have had pretty good success on the two pipes i have done in the past...and i said to myself, "never again", but here i go again!!!! |
