I recently aquired a V&H SS2R slip-on muffler in trade. Unfortunately (and ignorantly) I assumed (yes, I know, NEVER assume anything)that a '99 and '98 exhaust would be the same. Is it possible to have a 2 1/2" collector put on the stock 2" pipe? Would I have to find a 2 1/2" pipe and cut it off and reinstall it in place of the 2" or should an exhaust shop be able to manufacture one? Is any of this worth the hassle? Thanks, Kevin | ||

2-1/2" wasn't a 98-99 change, it came about with the Thunderstorm engine, on domestic bikes (intl t-storm bikes got a 2" ). So to convert your M2 to 2-1/2", just get a header from a '98 S1W (not S1, they're 2" ) or '98 S3. They show up on E-bay all the time. HOWEVER >>> if you have a muffler for a '99 model, putting a 2-1/2" S1W header on your bike ain't gonna solve your problem. Notice that muffler manufacturers list a different part number for '98 and '99 models, even in cases where both had a 2-1/2" header. This is because in '99, they changed the header pretty significantly, routing the rear head pipe under the frame tube, and the oulet also ends up in a slightly different place than '98 2-1/2" headers. I've seen people stretch and pull and make an incorrect muffler fit across this change, but I wouldn't do it, you'll just end up with a lot of stress in the system. My advice: sell your '99 muffler on E-bay. | ||

In '99, they changed both the header and the frame so that the rear head pipe could slip under the frame rail, instead of just dumping over it (people complained about heat from the rear head pipe on the 98 style). So the only way to get a '99 header onto a '98 is to also change the frame. | ||

I have seen a '99 header on a '98 S1W, but the owner had to slightly flatten the pipe where it went under the frame. It didn't look like it caused too much of a restriction, but obviously the area of the pipe there has been reduced a little bit. PPiA | ||

Recently spoke with Bill Gise over here at Competition Coatings and he said he can lathe out a piece of aluminum to fill in the gap and since it will be going from a smaller (the header) to larger (the muffler) there will be little to no change in performance. He also said he will ceramic coat my headers for about $30 to get his work out (He normally charges about $100 for a set of headers). I'll post pics in a couple of weeks. By the way, Bill is the man that did the frame work to turn my M2 tail into an S1. | ||

For Aaron or any one else in the know. Is there a difference in header pipe diameter between the '96 S 1 and the later thunderstorm headers? I know the collectors got bumped up to 2.5". Thanks in advance. Chris | ||

I need one of those flimsy stainless clamps like you get with the race muffler, only I need it 2" not 2.5" Anyone know where I can get such a beast?. The RS uses it to hold the exhaust mount to the pipe but mine is too worn down to use. | ||

No, they're all 1-3/4" primary tubes. I believe Firebolts come with unequal length 1-5/8" tubes. Blasts neck down to 1-5/8" right after the exhaust port. | ||

Here's the problem, the little oval exhaust hanger... (ya know the huge reinforced "Y" that's on the new bikes? The RS/RSS has a 1.5" long stainless strap that bolts to the bottom engine bolt and the bolt holding the aforementioned 2" clamp. But the strap attaches in the middle if the clamp bolt - between the 2 points it's holding on the clamp. You have to disassemble the clamp to get the strap on) ...needs to be right in the middle of the clamp and the bolt needs to be the exact right diameter. I'll try NAPA first since I can hold it in my hand and verify. | ||

Josh, I just got my RS back from the Guggenheim and I had to go through all this. The clamp you're speaking of broke on Mr. Canfield's trip to Vegas (which of course allowed way too much movement of the exhaust system and caused it to break a header stud on the rear head). Anyhoo, I just ordered a 2" Supertrapp clamp out of the Drag catalog and fixed it. Tommy can set you up with the little teardrop shaped stainless tab when yours wears out, too, and it will wear out if it hasn't already. Buell exhaust mounting problems go back a long way. The main thing is keep after this area, consider it PM to replace that clamp and tab periodically. Ride without it and you'll break a stud guaranteed. I got me one those JIMS exhaust drill fixtures to fix the stud. Worked slick as hell, I literally drilled all the way through the old stud with a 1/4" drill bit, broke through the bottom if it, without breaking out the side of it at all. Made a hollow bolt out of it. | ||

Yeah I got the teardrop from Tommy, guess I should have ordered a couple. The broken clamp was the reason I've only ridden it a few times, but the guy I bought it from never noticed it was bad (have I known too many Buells? The first thing I looked at was the exhaust). hmmmmmm. I wonder how the race kit mount would work on there? I have yet (with all my exhaust problems) still not broken a stud (knock knock). It was interesting getting the teardrop (and a parts manual) from Tommy. Took over a month (I sent my check first week of Dec so the holiday was the main problem) but the check still hasn't cleared. | ||

To all that were interested in the 2-1/2" muffler on a 2" collector: I just did this with a '98 muffler on my '97 S-3, and I machined a steel ring, 2.5" x 2.010" x 1.25" long, sawed a split in it, and slid everything together. the rear muffler mount is much more substantial than the '97 (one-piece, bent steel),but still fit up correctly. I'll let y'all know how it's holding up (once the ice melts!) | ||

Loki, I've seen some over-achieving bikes with the 2" header on'em. And I've seen bikes that were so-so, but then responded well to the 2-1/2" header. So I don't know what to tell you. Except think about XB heads  | ||

OC, I have been watching EBAY quite abit recently. I got a good deal on the S1W header, already polished, although it could use a little work. Snapping up some spares also, just watching for some good deals. Just snapped up a WP shock the other night. Also got some interesting parts for my Ruger Mini14. | ||
