I have a 98 S1 and have decided to do some winter maintenance. I pulled the can removed the 4 screws and when I pulled it apart this is what I have   It appears to be blown back to the rear of the canister. What can I use to repack the unit and how tight should it be packed around the inside. I also found a small hex head screw in the packing inside the muffler. Any idea what this screw was for. | ||

American Sport Bike has an excellent repacking kit for the Buell Race Muffler. ($20?) It comes in a sleeve and you just slip it on the inner grill. DAve | ||

Newfie, How many miles on your V&H? I have one and am just trying to get a fix approximate mileage before a repack is due. | ||

Bill, There is a total of 19150km on the bike and I put the V&H on at approx 9300km. I expexted the packing to last longer than that. Will the repacking kit for the Race Muffler work? If so, does anyone know the Buell part number? | ||

Bill and Bill, I have the Buell Race Muffler on my S-1. The factory packing lasted about 2K miles. I now have almost 7K miles on the packing material sold by Tat at American Sport Bike. His packing material is definitly better than the factory stuff. Mickey | ||

Thanks Mickey... My only prior experience was with a Supertrap on my KLR (Desert Sled) and that lasted about 4.0K on average before the bullets started flying in the 'hood. Newfie... FYI, don't forget to use lots of anti-sieze on the fasteners. I used to lube the fasteners on the SuperTrapp every 500 miles or so. Once they get messed up, amputation and creative bracketing is required to reuse the can. At least that's the way it was with the SuperTrapp. Hope the V&H is less inclined do to design and lack of baffle plates. | ||

Bill, I inspected the muffler and I can not find anywhere this little bolt would be from. I have taken a pic of it but it never came out very good. I really can't see it comming from the engine, I am hoping it was mixed up in the baffle material when it was originally manufactured. | ||

Newfie... Most likely the bolt was caught in the baffling during assembly. That used to happen all the time in production sheet metal shops. Then again, it never hurts to have a professional take a look at it and give an opinion. | ||

I found what its for, At my previous post I did not remove all the packing material and when I did, there was the spot. I have cleaned the surface rust from the end and repainted. Thanks |
