I saw the photo of Strada's Uly with extra lights on and, as I have been thinking of adding a set to my Uly, I was wondering what you guys have on yours.

I was thinking of PIAA 1100Xs, or similar PIAA lamps.

As usual, all hints, tips and suggestions are welcome and even better with photos too!

I have experience with both the PIAA 1100X, and the 510. They are both great, the 1100X looks a little brighter, the 510 matches the Uly better, but both suck compared to 50W HID lights. : )

Although I have my Aux lighting removed for the time being, I have the PIAA 510's...and like Froggy said, they look great on the Uly. I did convert them to HID, so combined with my High and Low beam HID conversion...I can get pretty bright!

Yeah Bruce...I guess the name sort of fits...of course "Over Kill" might have been a descriptive user name for me too!

On the other end of the spectrom, I'm using lights sourced from the local John Deer dealership. The buckets are constructed from rubber. No metal except for the mounts. This makes them very durable. They use sealed beam bulbs which gives me the advantage of a whole slew of choices from a flood or a spot to aircraft landing lights or pool lights. Bulbs run from $3 to about $15 depending on the model. I'm using the same machined lightbar as most here (can't recall the name- it's still early) and an autoswitch.

I bought ~$16 "Burners" from the local Advance Auto Parts store. I also had to spend $6 for a relay:

I mounted them on short pieces of (IIRC) 1/8" x 2" x 2" steel angle mounted to the turn signals (idea borrowed from Webe):

PIAA 510s do a great job of freezing a deer in its tracks...they also provided a great view. It was my first ride after installing them.

I've got a pair of PIAA driving lights mounted on Gary's (GME) light bar, and HIDs in the stock headlight assembly. I pointed the stockers down as low as they'll go and did the 2-headlight mod so both lights are on when the high beams are on. I leave the HIDs on all the time. I pointed the PIAAs up a little bit so they provide good long-distance lighting that doesn't need 10 seconds to warm up, versus trying to use the HIDs as my high beams - I've heard the HIDs don't take too kindly to being switched on and off a lot.

As you can see, instead of mounting them high like Froggy and Maximum, I mounted them low.

Some great ideas there!!! Thanks boys!

So let me get this straight, the 510s can be converted to HID? What are the 1100x, Xenon?

My previous arrangement, Hella FF50's w/ Ulytility bracket:

Ulytility w/ FF50's

Those lights were fantastic, and being H7's like the stockers 1 spare bulb aboard was fine. Problem was the bracket fell apart a couple times:

Ulytility failure

Installed GME's bar (superb) but the Hellas won't mount right, improvised the mounting then the Hellas mounts failed:

Hellas broke

Now I run Cityxslicker's WalMart $15.88 lights, they have $15.88 beam control but I use them to get the attention of the horrible drivers here where I've moved, not for night riding which I don't do much right now:

Uly July '08

The Hellas will go back on some day when I figure a good mount to GME's bar.

Just the twin HID's.

I don't like the look of the aux lights. I'm a minimalist kind of guy. : D

One 8500k white (high beam)
One 3500k super yellow (low beam)

Does the trick.

Yea but PIAA's raise your resell value and make it easier to sell the bike, oh and nobody wants a bike with miss matched lights that looks like its got a black eye from a bar fight ; )

"So let me get this straight, the 510s can be converted to HID?"

Refer back to my "Metamorphous 2008" thread for how I did the HID conversion to the PIAA 510's.

MAXIMUM's PIAA HID MOD...it's about 2/3rds the way down.

But in reality, 4 HID's is overkill...but then again, "too much is never enough"!

It beats the Jacob's ladder you'd need to put on the back to bleed off the excess stator juice.

Might as well convert some of that energy to light then heat and make yourself a deer-b-que.

Glenn,

I was looking at a set of those for the KLX to supplement the single headlight when I ride at night. Are they pretty durable? Do they throw a lot of light, or are they more for visibility's sake?

Seanp,

They're very durable. I have had no issues with them moving position, the lens or the bulbs.

The main reason I put them on at first was for visibility however the first night riding with them it was obvious that they throw a great driving light pattern and tons of light. I shut them of for a minute to see the difference and it was like I was driving with a flashlight and almost ran over a road killed beaver. I Swerved just in time and then never shut the lights off again.

Any lights that give you a nice wide triangular pattern are going to make you more obvious to traffic. Following my friend on his FJR after first putting them on I shut them off since I thought they might be annoying. When we stopped he asked me why I shut them off and he said to keep them on since I was really viable with them on.

They are pricey and the cost has gone up a lot in the last couple of years. I found the best price from California Sport Touring.

I bare witness to that last statement. When he is coming in for a landing from Denver to the High Country Buell landing strip, we can see him before his landing gear is down.

I have the Motolights on my FXDX. I really like them, but they were expensive. They go well with my bike though and everyone comments how much better they can see me. Like Glenn, I shut mine off once to see the difference. It was substantial. They have not been off since.

I bought mine directly from Motolights at Biketoberfest this year.
