As many of you know, I totaled out my Blast about 2 weeks ago. As soon as I get the check from All State I need to buy another bike. Instead of another Blast there is a used 08 XB12XT on the floor. It has just under 1000 miles and is in show room condition. It is pull me over red. I do some 2 up riding when I take my son to school and I love the idea of not having to wear a back pack any more when I commute to work. The more I think about this bike the more I think Eric had me in mind when it was designed. It's on consignment at the dealership I buy parts from and had a tagged price of $10,000. Seems to me that an offer of about $9,000 would be about right. NADA says about $9200 but that is for an X. The don't have data on the XT. Is $9000 a realistic offer or should I just give him the asking price? Thanks in advance for the advice. |

The MSRP is 12995 and if you can get for 10K jump on it. With only 1K miles on the clock the bike is like new and if NADA on the X is 9200 then 10000 for the XT is a good price IMO. If you don't buy it someone else will and you'll have to buy a new one or watch for a good used one. |

Here in CA, 10K for an 08 XT with 1K or less miles on it would be an incredible deal and not much likely to happen here. There's not a dealer in this state that I know of that wouldn't list such a bike for no less than 11.5K I'd jump on it. There's still one year of warranty on it to boot. |

Actually the warranty is more than that. More like 20 months. Is there anything to consider about the 08 XT? Have the bugs been worked out of it enough. No ECM problems or anything like that to worry about? Any other gottcha's to worry about? This will be my main transportation and I can't have a finicky bike. |

I believe there is an ecm reflash available for the 08 models. I would think the dealer can check the ecm to see if it's current. Only difference between the 08 & 09 besides ecm firmware that I can tell are the side stands and engine color. (black engines on 09) If I had the $$ to make up the difference I would trade my 12S in for one pronto. For me and my needs, I think the XT is the perfect bike. I wish it had been around in 05. |

My 08 XT has had a couple of niggles but other than the fuel pump mine has been relatively trouble free. I've not had a re-flash done but I have no complaints about the way it runs; no spits or sputters except when I got back on it last weekend in 28' weather it started fine but fell on its face and died when I rolled on the throttle. After 2-3 minutes of blipping the throttle once in awhile it ran fine. I was low on gas and that may have contributed. If you like the bike and can go 10K then buy it and don't look back. Just ride it and enjoy. |

I have an arrest me red '08 XT. If you can get it for ten grand, I'd say jump ASAP. I think the XT is a real bargain at MSRP; three thousand under is a steal. The XT is one of the sweetest motorcycles I've ever ridden. You're going to love it. |

Thanks for the input guys. The 28 degree weather doesn't frighten me. I'm in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. I think I'm tough when I ride to work in the upper 40's. Has any one else had any troubles I need to be aware of? |

Only issues with the 08's I have seen were fuel map related, and a few people had issues with the wiring harness, but not enough for me to raise a flag over it. Oh and there is an issue with checking the oil, after a minute its no longer accurate. I don't know if they got that figured out. |

it's like something that was built on a monday morning or a friday afternoon. no problems with mine yet and haven't had the ecm reflashed yet. scrap the blast and go get it. also remember, that someone elses loss is your gain. go in with a check for 9k and see if the balk at it. if they don't then perfect and if they do then tell them you'll be back with the rest later. |

I think I would insist on speaking with the current owner of the bike and see the reason for selling. Then again I am fairly good at reading people. Not having ridden a Blast, and only having sat on one, realize that the Uly is HUGE beast in comparison, and mine tends to get warm on my legs if I sit in much traffic with temps above ~55 (And that is through a pair of jeans and my suit or my overpants), so figure on doing something to keep the temps down like getting the headers ceramic coated or at least wrapping them, and probably some type of heat barrier on the frame. Price, asking seems like a good starting point, especially from a dealer. If you paid that price, you shouldn't feel like you were wronged in any way. |

Are there any other issues to be aware of? Tire wear or riding characteristics? This is a bigger bike than the Blast. Obviously it'll have a ton more HP and Torque but what should I look for and how different should I ride it compared to a Blast? |

i have an 08 X (same thing), and i'd have to say that 10 big ones is a sweet deal,christ thats less than i owe on mine trouble free from day one. |

When you crack the throttle wide open and the revs go past 3 Gs, be ready to dial it down a little. That funny wobble feeling in the handle bars is coming from the front tire just skimming the road surface. Look out for the full lock turn radius. Just something to get used to at first. |

Ourdee, Thanks for the warning. First off, I don't need that high of a pucker factor. Second, in Florida if you get caught without both wheels in contact with the ground, it's a thousand dollar fine. I don't need either...lol |

Well, I have some bad news. I went into the dealership this weekend and the XB12XT I have been coveting was gone. The owner had it in on consignment. Last week he comes in and takes the bike off the floor and drives MY bike away. They don't know if he's gonna ride it himself or if he used it as a trade in of a ricer. Either way it's gone. Son of a Bytch!!!!! Not sure what I'm gonna do now. In my area there are no XT's advertised. I really need something I can comfortably ride two up and has some bags to carry goodies in. I may have to look at the 09 Sportsters. Crap!! |

Zane, He who hesitates.... I'd ask for the person's name at the dealership. You've got nothing to lose now. in Florida if you get caught without both wheels in contact with the ground, it's a thousand dollar fine. Don't get caught ! |

Check with some board sponsors or the classifieds on here. There are 2 XT's for sale that I saw and would make a nice trip to get acquainted with. Good luck and don't give up the Uly is much nicer than a Sportster and I like it more than the Blast although the Blast is a great bike. |

That funny wobble feeling in the handle bars is coming from the front tire just skimming the road surface. Or, cruise in 1st gear shy of 30 mph (~3,500 RPM), open the throttle against the stop and the front wheel will climb to the clouds (try that on a Sportster). Right, don't get caught, but also know what what the machine is liable to do - so you won't be surprised when it happens. I see plenty of used Sportsters available for sale. I wonder why that is? Hmmmmm. |

I see plenty of used Sportsters available for sale. I wonder why that is? Hmmmmm. I owned 2 Sportys and while they're great bikes they pale in comparison to a Uly. Many new Sportster owners fall prey to the "bigger is better" mindset and wind up selling theirs before the new wears off for a big twin. Nothing wrong with Sportys but if you want a Uly then don't buy a Sporty or you'll never be happy. |

I cut my teeth on a sportster, I still think they are great bikes. Just a lot of fun to go burning around on. (that is, if you are only going to hang around on the pavement). They used to be really easy to put a spirit stroker kit into, or weld the cases and stroke, with big bore cylinders.(96 Inches on a sportster is awesome). But now I have grown older,(not grown up), and Found the ULY. no comparison!!! When you ride a Sportster though, there is a lot of pressure to ride bigger inch bikes, I.E. glides, But they are much slower, and the handling is like riding a Whale. (I could only imagine)... IMHO. |

I am having a hard time understanding how you could even attempt to fill the same gap with a Sportster. Kind of like saying, I really want the sports car, but they sold the one I wanted, so I will pick up a minivan. |

Sportys are great and all (had a 99, sold it a couple years ago) but eventually you get tired of dragging peg on the left and pipes on the right. If you're only going to have one bike, it is imperative that you get what you want. This is no time to compromise! Do not settle for less than what you want. Even if that means having to wait awhile to find an XT. If that is really what you truly want it will be more than worth the wait. |

the biggest thing to get used to going from a blast to an XB is the limited steering lock. The blast has much more. I almost dumped my XB doing a u-turn when the steering locked up unexpectedly. Never happened again though! |

Of the bikes available in my area there are no XT's to be had. I was contacted by the kind soul Dhalen32. Dave is researching availabilities at the dealer he works with. Like I told Dave, 1400 miles is a long road trip but lightly used XT would be worth the trip. I live in hope. Oh, I have some news from my lay down last month. Finally got in to see the ortho guy and found out that I have a medium tear in my right Meniscus. Guess I'll have to get that taken care of pretty soon. |

By the time you add in the cost of bringing a Sporty up to Uly standards you will have exceeded the MSRP of the XT. You will need new fork springs, rear shocks, windshield, seat, bags, mid-controls, etc. If I've left out anything feel free to add it. And that's just to make it close to the Uly. In short, don't waste your $ on a Sportster unless you really want one. Otherwise wait for a used XT or find a good 12X and buy the luggage. If you buy a Sportster you'll not be happy, I promise. |

Adamd, I have looked at other Buells. My dealership as a new 12Ss. It's an 09 and they are asking 11,900 for it. My requirements have changed since I got the blast. I was using my Blast as my main transportation. At this point I really want something with bags so I can stop at the store on the way home from work. I also ride 2 up every day to get my 14 year old to school. The SS is a sweet, sweet bike but not sure how it would look with bags on it. The XT would be just perfect for what I need a motorcycle to do. There won't be any off road riding but everything else it does is exactly what I need. I'm considering the Sportster partly because it's the lightest of the Harleys and the 1200 Custom pretty much fills all my requirement. Bags, windshield, and decent at two up riding. I have an out the door price of 11,300 for a black one and and good discounts for the goodies. (Message edited by Zane on January 07, 2009) |
