Grovskopa - on the right side of each cylinder, behind the airbox (if you've got a stock one) there are 2 holes which allow pressure in and out as the pistons rise and fall. (you may have heard of a PCV hose routed out the top of the valve cover on automobile engines?) When the engine is off and as it cools, moisture builds up and is then evaporated out of the oil when the engine is started again. The breather holes are where the moisture / oil / muck escapes the engine, but due to emissions reasons the muck is directed straight back into the air filter and sucked back into the engine to be burned. You can reroute the breather hoses to keep this muck out of your engine, and the common place to route the hoses is into a "catch can". Catch cans come in various designs but it's purpose is to collect the muck while still providing free-flowing ventilation for the breather holes. You will usually see the hoses routed into the bottom of the "catch can" and a small filter of some sort on the top of the catch can. The muck and air pressure is pushed into the catch can when the piston is on the compression or exhaust stroke, and air is allowed back in through the breather hoses when the piston is on the intake or combustion stroke. Here is an excellent write-up on installation of a custom (and cheap!) catch can setup. GREAT pics as well. http://users.adelphia.net/~jackerbes/Buell/breathe r.html |

I've also fitted a one way valve which allows air out of the crankcases but not back in again. Therefore, your engine is not acting as a big air pump, using power to first push the air out and then sucking it back in on the upstroke/s. Less spooge and more power. Also, from my perspective, although it took somebody else riding my bike for me to discover that you have less engine braking as well. A good cheap mod.

Full, Are you saying less engine braking is better? I don't understand. Nice bikes everyone. |

Less engine braking suits my riding style. It was funny that I hadn't even noticed it on my own bike. Yeah, I kind of like it. It's not gone completely, it's more subtle than that. It's just reduced to some extent. |

Less engine braking means you can downshift more aggressively coming into a turn. |

The tank is black now and I've since slapped on a nice set of crg bar end mirrors, but here's mine:

I've actually been reading that removing the front pully cover might not be such a good idea in the long run, so I've been considering finding a more attractive replacement than the stock piece. I love seeing the pulley though, so I'll most likely go with this one from RRC:
http://www.r-r-customizing.de/shop_b_eng/index.html?target=p_51.html&lang=en-us I'll snap a shot from the front this eve, the dual headlights are just a natural fit on buells. Jespo, those black push rod tubes stock? I'd like to buy some already done as opposed to powder coating mine. |

LimitedX1 - tail section came from the fine folks at RRC in germany: {http://www.r-r-customizing.de/shop_b_eng/index.html,http://www.r-r-customizing.de/shop_b_eng/index.html} Grovskopa - Here's some of the streetfighter3 headlight and just a few more in the current black state. Man I love this bike.
It's like, how much more black could it be? and the answer is none. None more black. That is, except for the black swingarm I have waiting to be installed... |

that'd be most commonly pronounced Kuh-thul-hu, although there are a couple acceptable variants |

Engine braking is affected by flywheel mass ONLY. The mass on a harley twin is MUCH more than an inline4. Run your Buell to redline in first and abruptly chop the throttle. The flywheel inertia will keep spinning(little engine braking). An inline4 engine has VERY little flywheel mass. When you run up to redline in first and abruptly chop the throttle, there's not enough flywheel mass/imertia to keep it spinning and it's engine braking forces slow the engine violently. Kevin Cameron is an excellent moto-journalist who wrote the article. A crankcase vent will not affect engine braking. Obligatory X1 pic The Ducati in the pic has (for a twin) a great amount of engine braking forces due to it's VERY short stroke, balanced 90 degree layout, and aluminum flywheel weights |

Wile - A bit over a buck twenty on the buell, and to be honest, I'm glad that's about where it starts running out of juice. I used to have a GXSR that I would seldom see less than triple digits, and my high mark on that one was upwards of 155. Now that I'm a older and (arguably) a bit wiser, I actually appreciate the buell's lack of top end. My problem with bikes is that if I have one that can go 210, I'm going to go 210, even it's it's just one time to get a taste of it. Knowing that about myself, I like the sanity constraint of the buell, and now it's that brutal and inelegant release of low and mid range power that has me grinning and giggling like an complete idiot. The fact that I have to consciously and intentionally NOT wheelie when applying the throttle with enthusiasm in gears 1 through 3 are testaments to the insane amount of torque these machines put out, and for the most part I don't even feel compelled to crack the ton these days. |

Thanks ducxl. I suppose that's the problem with subjective seat of the pants stuff rather than something more scientific. Now that you mention it, the guy who rode the X1 and made the comment usually rides a big XJR Yamaha so that fits with what you're saying. Good one. I love this site. |

Kyrocket - the X1W White Lightnings had black pushrod tubes as standard. Maybe all '02 X1's too?

Thanks, I'll check into it. I'd rather get them like that than to un-chrome mine and powder coat them. Maybe when it gets closer to time someone with black ones would like to trade. Mine are perfect, I just want the black ones. Going to powder coat my rocker boxes too and change over to the XB's. |
