'06 Uly, replacing the stator. Managed to get the Engine sprocket Nut off... but can't get the sprocket off. SM says to use the 2 leg puller (from HD) and 'some bolts' in the slots. I don't have that tool, but do have a puller that would work.... if I could find the bolts that would fit. My assumption is that the bolts would be used to screw into the sprocket where the 8 holes are (the back side of where its mounted to the housing around the stator). I've tried every size I can find.. and nothing seems fits. The SM says the bolts that are in the other side of the holes are 1/4-20.... same size (except length) as the primary cover... they are way to big? Sooo,I must be wrong...what am I missing? Or what is the trick.. it seems to be on there really good considering the nut is off?? (I also posted this in the KV). |

remember it is a magnet too... They can be tough to pull off. Anyway I dont know the bolt size but all the ones I pulled myself I have done by hand. |

The 2 holes are Jacking bolts. If you screw two of the right size bolts in evenly this will slowly Jack the sprocket off. The puller cross bar is probably threaded so the cross bar opposite of the 2 jaws pulling the sprocket off the shaft. the center pull doesn't pull even enough most the time. Some times the holes in the sprocket are threaded(course) so there is no reason to use the puller. the puller kit may just have the right bolts to use and not even use the cross bar and hooks. I'm not a good drawer but this might help or not.

"right size bolts"... there in lies the problem. I've tried metric 5,6,7,8 mm and SAE #6,8,10,12 and 1/4 in....nothing fits... they are either to small to thread or to large for the hole??? |

I haven't had to pull mine, so I don't know what you are looking at, but from my experience pulling other things I have a question: Are all 8 of the holes the same size? I have seen hardware where the holes/threads are different in each pair of holes, so that a variety of bolts can be the "right size bolts" |

Ah, you were posting the photo as I was typing that,.. I see now that my thought is unlikely. On all of the Sportsters I have worked on the sprockets have pulled off by hand fairly easily. Perhaps yours is slightly misaligned on the shaft - try putting the nut back on, not too tight, but enough to make sure that the sprocket is on the shaft correctly, then remove the nut and try pulling the sprocket off by hand. If that fails, maybe try applying some heat? |

Do you have the Shop manual? I followed the book last winter to change my chain and sprocket to a "9" and had no trouble. I believe the front and rear sprockets have to come off together with the chain and that was tricky IIRC. Good luck. |

Yup have the SM.. was doing what it said. It does note that if you need it, use the 2 footed puller and 'some bolts'... Based on what I see.. there is no way to get 2 bolts threaded into the holes... Any way.. I did finally get it off. Had to have a friend come over with an extra set of hands... jury rigged a puller that would work with what we had... had to use the puller to get it almost all the way off. Once off we noticed some residue of some kind on the spindle... looks like that is what was binding it up. Once that was cleaned up the sprocket slides on and off like its supposed to with just the expected magnetic pull. |

Judging by the photo, the "residue" appears to be red loctite. Looks like the last time the nut was installed, there was plenty used, since it is even on the sprocket in the outline of the nut or washer. |

Must have come from the factory that way.. this is the first time the engine sprocket has been pulled (33K miles). There was also a very very fine grit feeling to what ever it was. |
