American Oxford: 3 a freshwater reptile related to the turtles, typically having a flattened shell. Called terrapin in South Africa and India and tortoise in Australia. | ||

We are a lost cause Dave, Americans call things what we want. Tissue is Kleenex, a bandage is a Band Aid, the Miami Dolphins sport a porpoise as a mascot..... hell, people are starting to accept Irregardless as an actual word. (in fact the sites spell check let it pass.) They mix irrespective and regardless in an attempt to sound intelligent and fall flat. Another favorite is conversate in place of converse. American Choppers guys do it alllll the time, you could make a drinking game of it. | ||

Don't grumble too much about "turtle" and "tortoise", they're both correct for many species according to which variant of English you're speaking. Down under, all non-SEA turtles are called "tortoises"...technically, it's still considered an acceptable taxonomic variant, although genus classifications do correspond to the Northern hemispheric common terms.
