hey can any one tell me why some people are recomending the race ecm and air box / filter swap on new bikes? mines brand new <26> havent rode it yet as im over seas right now , and jus courious whats the pros and cons there! |

Starts with people wanting a louder exhaust. Which means more air flow Which means bike runs lean Which means bike goes boom Which means Race ECM Which makes bike run richer Which means bike goes rumble rumble rumble Which results in a big smile |

thats what i thought , this is not my first bike , but all the previous ones were carb fed , so swap pipe + add bigger jets , no more lean , but i understand the concept with the "FI" , i was just courious if there was something wrong with the stock ecm, thanks man |

Ulyessesman- I see your bike is an 08. There ain't no race ECM for the 08's (at least not yet). The 08's use different a ignition system and FI system from previous XB's; the pre-08 race ECM's won't work. |

I didn't want a louder exhaust. I just wanted more power. Loud exhaust was part of getting more power. |

thanx hugh, i looked on american sport bike. com and was wonderin why there was no ecm for my bike , i still havent rode it yet but i know ill end up swappin the stock pipe for something else anyway , when ever i can get all the parts, hey chad you could always run hand made straight pipes outta the headers, but with the self adjusting valves i dont know how bad they would "flutter" or if even a race ecm would run rich enuf to accept the increased flow, i know you said you dident want loud pipes but its an idea!, thank yall |

Which means bike runs lean Which means bike goes boom The ECM prevents the engine from running too lean. This is proved for models up to 2007 and there's no evidence that this feature had been removed for the 2008 models. Regards, Gunter |

when the 08s first came out, there was talk of a race ecm coming down the tracks anyday....a year later, nada! you can call techlusion, ecm spy, asb, daytona tech, or the pope and no one has a solution to some of the funky low speed issues of the 08s... you can have the updated flash done, or wistle dixie and get the same result... the 07 harley baggers had basically the same lean running leg roasting problem that the moco reflashed, to no avail...if you go to the harley forum, you can read about all the POed owners...the 08 models were only mildly improved.. the difference being, is that you could install the screamin beagle race tuner and it would solve some of the issues... we dont have that luxury with the buells... maybe next year, or the next.. |

Yeah I had to do the screaming eagle race tuner on my '07 Ultra Classic. Had my local shop dyno tune after I installed a freer flowing air filter and V&H slipons. He fixed the heat problem for me and got me more power. |

yep, my 07 flht ran much better and cooler after the SERT...never got rid of the vibration though..many are finding cranks out of specs... i have not touched my 08xb, for the fear that a change might really put it in tilt mode...i have been complaining to buell customer service and the first question they ask me, is what mods ive done to the bike...i could tell she was dying to be able to blame the problem on a mod.. |

This is a crying shame! I've never owned a Buell that ran so bad, and caused me so much grief as my 2008 Uly. It shifts harder than my '93 FXR, surges and misses between 1500 and 3500 RPM, and cooks my right leg. If I ride it long enough in the Arizona heat, it will cook both my legs, it heats up the Gas tank/frame so much... I find myself riding my S2 more than the Uly!

i feel your pain, i have a roasted thigh and baked glutes...oh well, it keeps me warm in the winter.. ill ride the S-3 more in the summer. |

The race ECM also has a much different timing curve, and I suspect this is the greater source of why it runs much better and makes better power. Thanks to Gunter's work, my stock ECM now uses the race ECM timing map and a modified race fuel map. Quite a difference. My modified stock exhaust is not hugely louder than stock, much quieter than the race pipe, Drummer, or SpecOps pipes, and loud was not a goal of mine. I would be surprised if the '08 ECM could not be similarly remapped though ECMSpy cannot program it. Worth looking into. |

asb has been working for some time on the 08 ecm spy thing... the last time i called there, no luck! it looks like the moco has done a pretty good job of locking us out.... |

I doubt it, or they couldn't flash it themselves. It is the next generation FI system, the EEPROM mapping has got to be a lot different, and a bit more complex. It'll happen. Gunter and Ralf removed the shrouds of mystery. |

The dealer show is this week, thats when they will let the cat out of the bag about any new performance goodies, assuming there are some. We already know the 1125R is getting a race kit, they might have something in store for us mudslingers |

One thing is for sure; the 08 CAN be improved. I've been a Victory tuner for some time and I can tell the bike is way too lean and the timing is slowed to prevent detonation. There is no accelerator pump features and it only gets right at the top. There is a lot more flexibility in there, BUT, we are dealing with closed loop system with an oxygen sensor and a map sensor. Stoichiometrics and ideal performance is great for the EPA and the environment. Hexidecimal codes and voodoo coupled with a dyno and exhaust gas analyzer will get results eventually. Don't forget the hillbilly cussin! HERE IS A HINT FOR THE ADVANCED BUELL TUNERS - make the computer err to the rich side instead of the lean side. |
