So I'm bombing along having a great time when WHAT THE? Yep, that old familiar dead feeling came back. This is my 5th BAS. Fourth one AFTER the recall. I don't think I ride any differently than any other Uly owner. I don't live in a location that is particularly any harsher than any other Uly owner. I haven't done any modifications to the tail section of the Uly (no heat shields, plastic doohickeys, weird pieces of aluminum foil). WHY is this happening? The ECM won't throw a code for it, so there is no way to diagnose what is happening. What is the mystery factor? Up until now, it's been covered under warranty. The warranty ended in June. This one is on my dime. Granted it's a cheap part, but I'm getting about 4,000 miles on average out of a BAS. That's less than the oil interval. What am I doing wrong? What do I need to stop doing (besides not ride it) to keep this from happening? |

Bank Angle Sensor (BAS) = turns the engine (fuel pump) off in the event of an upset. The BAS can be turned off with ECM Spy; but I would not recommend doing it... |

Thanks "Teeps"... Oh yeah... bummer luck Ft_Bstrd especially on this beautiful TN day.... nice and cool with pretty "Simpson Style" clouds as my wife calls them... but it sounds like you were out in it... at least it was 94 and 100% humidity like earlier this week... 118 heat index... yuck... I read somewhere that tires and bank angle sensors are especially sensitive to twisted, demented personalities. Probably not relevant here, though. |

Damn fatty that sucks. I feel your pain. Are you still in warranty? |

Nope. I think they are $25, so they aren't really expensive. Replacing the BAS is only fixing the symptoms. I want a cure for the disease. Could it be the burrito platter? |

Is yours by any chance hard mounted to the latch plate or does it have the rubber isolators?? |

FB- have you determined for SURE that the BAS's are bad? I'm just wondering if there could be a broken wire in the leads to the BAS that rarely separates, mimicking a bad BAS. You sure seem to have the record for BAS replacements. |

FB, Buell needs to confirm the failure for you. It would seems that the problem is not the BAS or if the same person is installing the BAS then they are getting something wrong. If the BAS is really failing then it is unlikely that it is the BAS itself IMO. It is something about the installation (faulty ground etc) or there is some other component of your bike that is contributing to the problem - electrical spikes etc. I would expect that you will get this faulty part back when it is replaced since it's out of warranty. I would try to confirm that the BAS is really faulty by some means. If it is intermittent then this will probably not work. Might your bike have some sort of vibration contributing to the problem? At this point it seems pretty likely that the problem is more than just the BAS. |

When it goes out, is it completely out? Can you shake it and get a few more miles out of it? Wanna turn the BAS system off with ECMspy? Mine works fine when it should. I tested it a creek in leapers fork two weeks ago. A classic "get off and swim" maneuver. (Message edited by Barker on July 13, 2008) |

Expired warranty or not, something ain't right with your bike. I've had my '06 in for three warranty issues since the BAS debacle and they insisted I change it out and I more than insisted no they won't. 50k, no BAS problems. I don't fix what isn't broken. I think your dealer should start with a donor/loaner ECM, since you're on great terms with them. Cheaper than Lemon Law... |

I am in the camp that it's specific to the bike. I have 32K with the original BAS with no problems. I have seen a wire break inside the insulation of a Buell causing an intermittent problem. If it were me, I would see if you can get the normal operating parameters of the BAS. Then check the circuit to see if they are running within those parameters. You may be burning out the BAS because of a ground fault or loose pin in one of the many connectors of the circuit. |

>>>>This one is on my dime. That's inaccurate. Buell would be thrilled to help out but your dealer is going to need to determine the root cause. It seems to me, unless somehow Buell has miraculously built one bike that behaves differently than the other 30,000, that something else must be contributing. Get ahold of your dealer to get the process started. In the meantime I'll give the Guru's in Technical Support the heads up. Send me an e-mail and I'll get your dealer the contact number for the folks they'll need to get the proper support. |

Fatty, I'm betting you ride with the engine spooled up. The extra heat from the fan has killed 2 bas units on my bike when I ride like that. I modded my Odie blanket to tuck under the bas (still in original 06 location) to protect the bas/ecm/battery and have not had a problem since. |

I have ridden with him. It really could be the burrito platters. He gets them smothered in hot sauce and extra grease. Could be the extra heat caused by ventilation in the immediate area. What would happen if you moved it to outside the vehicle, where cooler fresher air would be? Really though, I would also expect a bad wire, connector, or ground. |

Curiously enough, my BAS turned off the fuel pump a couple weeks ago leading to the "What the..." experience. It just did it again this morning on the way to work. I don't feel safe cycling the ignition whilst in motion in traffic on the highway. But one does what one must. This is post recall, original BAS, 6K miles. (ok ok don't give me grief. I am finishing building a house. I don't ride enough, I admit it) |

Maybe it just needs to be routinely exercised by laying the bike over every so often? |

Ahhhhhhccck!!!......Girly stuff.....I did it two up, 65 mph, const area traffic, concrete wall to the left, no berm, cars to the right, semi behind and closing in! I was glad it had failed a few times before so I was practiced up! |

How, I wonder, would one go about eliminating the BAS entirely? |

What is the latest opinion on the temp blankets,do they make the BAS more likely to fail or not ? |

How about putting the BAS in place of the (mostly bypassed) exhaust valve servo, on top of the airbox? Since many folks I see on here (myself included) have either wired the valve open or installed a valve-less muffler, it would seem an ideal (and nice and cool) location to try... |

It ain't temperature. My BAS was relocated to the tail, afaik so was Fatty's. I doubt it is vibes, could be wrong though. I *did* have the Uly take a dirt nap a few weeks ago, dunno if that had anything to do with it. |

If the wiring harness is the culprit, he could jumper out the BAS and the bike would still cut out as if it was tipping over all the time, right? At least then you would have somewhere to go. |

I've had a some problems with my bas as well. Mine only seems to give me problems when I ride with the motor quite spooled up...over 4 grand or extended periods of time at 82 mph or faster. One trip from Appleton to Eau Claire, I couldn't ride for more than 20 minutes without the dumb thing shutting off. So the next trip I slowed down to under 80 and no shut-offs . My fuel pump also was replaced under warranty about a year ago. The new one is WAY quieter. I haven't done any thing with my bas-I just cycle the kill switch and keep riding. That maybe isn't the wisest approach, but I'm too busy to do anything else, and the bike is now out of warranty. Thankfully, I had Appleton Harley-Buell (Wisconsin) try to fix it while still under warranty, so I have a bit of documentation. |

Sooo............. I'm just going to throw this out there, when my Uly was doing the same thing and was cycling the kill switch and convinced it was the BAS. I took my lower fairing off and unplugged all the connectors on the right side of the engine in front of the front pulley and have NEVER had the issue since. I actually pulled them again and coated them with Dielectric grease. Problem solved. (Message edited by slowride on July 18, 2008) |
