I'm looking at Royal Purple 20w50 for the next oil change in my 2000 X1. Has anyone used this oil before? |

I currently run the RP max-cycle 20W-50 and and happy with it. My 06 Uly is still producing blow-by into air filter, but I am happy with the RP. I decided to change from the HD Syn oil after the 5K service. I have been running RP for @ 12K now, and it seems to do better than the HD Syn. This is just my opinion. |

Have you thought about rerouting the hoses? Oil not good for O2 sensor. |

Check with RP! Stay clear of GL-5 gear oils unless specifically recommended by the mfg. (like Redline's products) Likely you can use the same engine oil as in the tranny -- just like SYN3! I use Mobil1 in both engine and tranny. |

Hell no use the rp gear oil. You'll feel a definete improvement in shifting. |

I put Mobile 1 15w50 in the tranny a few days ago but no change in shifting. Still clunky as hell. Only 1200 miles on the bike though. My wife's 03 XB9 has 2k on it and it shifts like butter. |

Mobil 1 (gear lubricant) is suspect in NUMEROUS voltage regulator stator failures... Blake added "gear lubricant" and "stators" for clarification (Message edited by Blake on May 15, 2008) |

PLEASE -- be careful before you make WILD accusations. Unless you can provide facts then please don't make statements. It only hurts the integrity of the board and reduces the value of this forum. There is nothing wrong with Mobil 1 engine oil in the tranny. Here's the facts: There has been a specific type of stator failure reported with the use of GL-5 Gear oils, NOT motor oils. Mobil1 specifically documents AGAINST the use of its GL-5 gear oils in motorcycle tranny's. Before you use a GL-5 gear oil (or ANY lubricant) then check with the mfg. to see if it's okay to use. There, now isn't that simple? Brakes: Replacing oil won't fix a clunky tranny. I found that the biggest effect on a clunky tranny was the proper adjustment of the clutch -- remember there are TWO adjustments that need to be made. Make sure these are adjusted properly. I'll start with "tidbits of info" and end with the specifics all copied from Mobil1 website on their GL-5 Gear Oil: #...to provide a significantly higher level of performance in rear axles Sloppy: Tranny is not a rear axle. # This unique, high technology final drive gear lubricant... Sloppy: Tranny is not a final drive. # Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-90 is recommended for use in modern high performance automobiles like SUV's, Vans and Light duty trucks requiring API GL-5 and MT-1 level performance Sloppy: No motorcycle application listed. # Mobil 1 Synthetic gear Lubricant LS 75W-90 is intended for initial fill, topping-off or refilling differentials, final drives, transfer cases and other gear applications where lubricants meeting API Service GL-5 and multi-purpose or mild EP gear lubricants are recommended Sloppy: No application listed for sequential transmission and HD does NOT SPECIFY the use of GL-5 gear oils. # Not recommended for automatic, manual or semiautomatic transmissions for which engine oil or automatic transmission fluids are recommended. Sloppy: The nail - HD (and MOST oil companies, inlcuding Mobil1) do recommend their motor oil (SYN 3) in the tranny. Hence Mobil1 specifically states a "not recommended" in transmissions for their GL-5 gear oil. There's plenty of warnings here to warrant the question -- WHY do people feel compelled to put GL-5 gear oil in the tranny when ALL but ONE mgfg. does NOT recommend it? Reading between the lines? -- maybe. But I'll challenge ANYONE to contact Mobil1 to see if they will recommend their GL-5 gear oil in your tranny. Or do people feel that they are better Tribologists than those employed at Mobil1? Other mfg. also do not recommend GL-5's, such as RP, Amsoil, HD, etc. Only Redline does, but they say they have "special" ingredients (but they've recommended some 3 different types of their oil so I'm not sure what's going on with them). In regards to stator failure mode, I have not heard or read on this forum a stator failure of the epoxy connection / stator to VR wire corrosion from anything other than a GL-5 gear oil. Not saying it hasn't happened, but I haven't heard it... most people confuse the BROKEN WIRE failure rather the CORROSION WIRE failure when they say that they have stator failure using non-GL-5 gear oil. COMPLETELY different failure mode -- cold work fracture vs. corrosion. (Message edited by sloppy on May 15, 2008) |

I just started doing my own maintenance work, so as for the amount of oil needed I don't know.. I had royal purple 20w50 synth in my tranny for a while, had the dealer replace it while they were doing other tranny work. They used something called sport trans? or sport track? don't remember exactly what the name was but any buell dealer should know what you mean if you ask for it. It's a combination synthetic and mineral oil and i think the tranny feels better than it did with the full synthetic RP. |

Sport-Trans is a great product. It provides ample shear resistance between gears and the proper friction coefficient needed for a wet clutch. The replacement, Formula+ is a purely mineral-based replacement for Sport-Trans, and does an equally impressive job. I've always used Syn3 since its inception, as it has out performed a lot of lubes out there, and because it has been tested by the motor company to be fully compliant with any warranty issues. If they find another lube in there, you may be on your own. Just my opinion... Chris |
