I did the FI to carb on my X1. I've tried both tanks, If you remove the spring from the pressure regulator on the fuel pump it won't force fuel past the float. Your low fuel waring light still works, and you get full capacity. I put an inline shut off to be able to remove the tank easily. I tried a petcock tank, but there was the whole getting the seat to meet the tank issue. The next try will be a FI tank with a petcock in the lower pick up area, so I have a reserve. I going to use harleys/pingle FI to carb conversion fittings. Has anyone else done this?

i sent an email to pingel and told them what i was trying to do...i asked if they made anything to convert the FI buell tank to a carb and the answer was, "sorry"!

the bottom of the EFI tank, shows the fuel pick-up is not at the lowest level..

the carb tank is different...

fitment of the seat is not a problem, just a matter of paint...

This is a pingel petcock and their adapter. Look in J&P for a source of pingle.

i like that joe!.. now why couldnt the dude at pingel tell me that?..do you know the part number of the valve, i saw the adaptor... also, how about the wiring hole, it looks almost like the same thread as a stock harley tank... can it be used??

what is the life expectancy on these plastic fuel tanks? anyone have an idea?

Thanks, the wire is what's left of the fuel pump assembly so it's Buell,that is how I filled that hole and keep the low fuel light. At work so I don't have access to the part number, it was a pro flow, high volume for the carbureted bikes. Your choice with Pingel, just remember to get the adapter and petcock with the same hole size. The sealant was hylomar, check around for the stuff, got my offline somewhere, going to need it to reassemble the fuel filler assembly. Buell has the rubber gasket/splash shield. The adapter sealed just fine. I made a metal backing plate for inside the tank for the adapter to thread into.

what happened to the article about upgrading to xb rocker boxes?..i did this mod to my M-2 a few years ago... it seems to me that you discard the umbrella valve...

i got a package from NRHS today....i had my cam cover cut down...

while i had the cover off, i installed a new oil pump bronze gear from American Sport Bike...

i got it all bolted together and it looks much cleaner...

i also recieved my 24 tooth sprocket, which should give me some good low speed grunt...ill worry about installing it tomorrow...

ok, ill answer my own question in case someone else needs to know...its 1 1/8 inch...
this has been a learning experience for me, as ive never delt with a sportster motor before.. i found out, that my bike already had a 34 tooth front sprocket...at first i couldnt understand why it would be the same as an xb9, but i realize that the xb models have more teeth on their rear belt sprockets...so, by installing the above sprocket, all i would gain is the 8 bolt design and it is lighter...so at this time im not goint to install it.. and the fact that i dont have a torque wrench that will go to 200 plus foot pounds..
i was thinking if installing the sprocket in my xb, but the 08s have a new part number and no one knows what the difference is...so the only thing that i accomplished by removing the clutch side cover, was the updated chain tensioner..

i did kind of a quick job on the paint...i just laid it down on some cardboard and squinted with a spray can of black paint..i was going to powder coat it, but i was afraid of the sand blasting material getting in the bearings..

today was not a good one in the mod dept...i tried to install the daytona twin tech single fire coil and it wouldnt fit the stock location... i had heard in the past about others having to fab a bracket to make these fit...anyone have experience doing this?? the coil rubs on the frame and is too high for the fuel tank...doooh!

Had the same problem with my crane coil. Use some aluminum spacers to get the clearance.

when i started this project, my intention was to get rid of the plastic handlebar controls and put a real one inch handlebar on the bike...as usual, things dont always go like it did in my mind.... i bought handlebar controls from a sporty and have some parts from my flht that i wanted to use... i bought an intake from an M-2 and a CV carb from a fatboy...there is a difference between a carb from a buell and a harley, in the throttle linkage...i found this out several years ago, when i put a mikuni from my deuce on my first M-2.. the throttle cables are about an inch longer on the buell...im getting lazy and thought that i would just keep the buell bars and linkage for a while and worry about the one inch bars later..NOT!...i installed the fatboy carb and there is not enought adjustment in the cables.. so i can either continue with the one inch bar route, or find a cv carb from a buell..the main problem in putting the one inch bars on an S-3, is finding a set of bars that will fit... yep, i can bore out the triple tree to one inch, no problem....i can get a set of bars that will bolt up... but the hand controls are in a different orientation on the one inch bars, that makes things more complicated...then comes the problem of the master cylinder and controls clearing the fairing.... if i didnt live in a two horse town, i could go to a motorcycle shop and look for solutions...ugly women is not the only down side to living here...

as you can see, with almost all the cable adjustment, i still have about half an inch too much slack....

i also thought about using billet trees from www.accutronix.com ... i called the company and he said they would work if i used internal fork stops...i wonder what my fork tubes measure, they have to be 54mm to fit....then again, they put the tubes one inch further foward and again it has to clear the fairing.. more complications...this project is getting too expensive!!!

Left you the link for sudco in your knowledge vault post, didn't understand that you where using a CV vs HSR42. Should be able to get the throttle brackets from HD/Buell but not sure of the cable hookup on the shaft. Might just split some aluminum tubing and braze on the pictured brackets

ok, i wimped out and bought a cv carb from a member from a 98 S-1 and will keep the stock handlebar controls.. i have gone the mikuni route in the past with success on my twin cam bikes... however, its hard to beat a cv for reliability and they run almost as good when set up right.. they even adjust for altitude, which a mikuni wont..

If you can answer this for me, the 24 tooth sprocket is for the belt drive and comes from an XB9?

I am currently running a 26 tooth on my M2, but would like to try a 24 tooth if it bolts right up to my current setup.

i was mistaken...like i said, this has been a learning project...the primary gear you have is basically the same as in the xb9, but some are lighter than other and in 2000 they used 8 bolts instead of 4...the difference in gearing in the tube and the xb, is in the rear belt pulley..the xb have about 4 more teeth than the tubers, i believe..the xb12 model has more teeth on the primary than the tubes have...about the only way i can think of to lower the gear ratio in a tuber, is to either adapt an xb rear belt pulley or put an aftermarket 26 tooth front belt pulley on..

are we talking about the same thing?...are you refering to the primary sprocket or the front drive belt sprocket?
i misunderstood, i thought you were talking about the primary sprocket inside the primary cover... i would like to put an xb rear belt sprocket, that would give about ten percent gear reduction, i believe...i agree, stock, the tubes are geared to tall for my taste..
