Hey ya'll! I just joined the Uly club with a mostly stock 06'with 7500 miles, in Black (fastest and best in the twisties) I'm super excited to get it all farkled out. I read a lot from this site before buying... with swayed me from the BMW scene. Thanks for posting in-depth reviews and comparisons. i saved thousands. Wife and I are going to take it down the Pacific Coast Highway and to AZ over spring break. Any opinions out there on the bags people have mounted? I'm not a fan of the stock system. Caribou cases are looking like a pretty good option. How about top cases and mounting options? What other touring mods would ya'll recommend? Thanks and lookin' forward to putting some miles on her.  | ||

Welcome aboard Tom, and congrats on your new bike. Good color choice. Some of the mods I've gone with to make things much nicer (especially in the winter) is a taller ZG windscreen and the OEM Heated Grips which now come stock on the 08. I have the HB hard bags so I can only comment on them, but I do really like them. Have fun and be safe. | ||

Congrats,...another black bike into the fold. George, There are several vendors that sell pucks (easier on-off)- but I would just drill and mount as I did on my prior bike. The Pelicans are really very strong, and I would use them as much for lay down protection (both the bike and ME)as for storage. Makes it a whole lot easier to pick up the bike, as well. Here's the Caribou Sys., they use Pelican cases.  These are the 1550's; the 1520's are slightly smaller at 25L, and I think look better on the ULY. Here's the puck sys. from happy trails-50 bucks or so:  http://www.happy-trail.com The 1520's are $83 each, so $166 for the cases and $255 for the SU racks, $50 for the pucks -- say, $471 plus shipping. . How do the pelican cases connect to the racks? Is this a more cost-effective setup than the factory rig? | ||

John, Thanks for all of the info and tips. I'm also curious about the specifics of how you drilled and bolted the cases to the racks. I have some concepts in mind and am looking for alternatives or verification. I noticed with the pucks, they also include a "ledge" to provide broad support. Do you do something similar? Did you Photo Shop the Uly with the cases? Those 1550s really look too big for the Uly. Make it look "hippy" in a certain sense. George | ||

Welcome to the group. You'll find lots of use full information here,I have. I did a 3200 mile around trip this Summer on my 06. no problems,except a sore right hand. I'm putting on some type of Throttle Friction Control next time. Riding two up is no problem either, Wife says the bike is comfortable to ride two up. | ||

Hey George, The photo is NOT Photo Shop'd, but came from the Caribou website - they use Pelican 1550's in their kit ($750 or so)for the Uly. I think they are big looking for the Uly, which has a shorter wheelbase than say a KLR650 or BMW GS. It is not such a good idea to just bolt the cases on w/o pucks, they are too hard to take off if you need to - its just the way I did it before, 'cause at the time I just didn't feel like waiting to get the pucks. Ck out the Caribou website LINK: http://www.adventure-motorcycle.com/store/?name=Ca talog&mode=i&item=000066 The Hepco & Becker side cases are 42L the Pelican 1550's are 35L. The 1550's are a lot bigger (in side profile) than the H&P and hold less. The H&P are wider (rear profile), which I think is a good thing if you lay it down and they appear smaller in side profile, which IMHO looks better... plus they are Buel factory bags. If you go with the smaller 1520 Pelicans, they only hold 25L and are not as wide in rear profile, so less protective if you lay it down. The Buell Hepco & Becker side cases are $799 or $640 if Andy does another 20% OFF one of these days. Just a thought, I guess. BTW, the more research I do, the more I am leaning toward the H&B, for both capacity, factory look and protection. Historically, I have done 90+% on-road, but being able to off-road with hard side cases is reassuring, and its great to know if you lay it down on or off pvmt., you are less likely to crush a leg or ankle. I have the HB side and top cases and I am very pleased with them. There has been a little issue with latches breaking, I broke one. When you learn to load them with out using the latch to lever the bag shut and make sure there is nothing in the way of the seal they are no problem. The seals in the side bags can be snagged out of place but they are easy to put back in. The single key for the locks and retaining latches are nice and it is real easy to detach them for use in a motel. I have tipped my bike over on each side and the bags prevented any damage to the bike and have just a minor scuff on each side from the separate incidents. Still no leaks or cracks. Each of the bags will hold a full face helmet along with other stuff. |
