JC Check with the oil manufacturer if you should be using that GL-5 oil in the tranny. Most GL-5 oils are corrosive to brass and copper and many have reported stator failures due to GL-5 oils. The oil manufacturer will let you know if you should use thei gear oil in that application. There are many excellent and easy to find alternatives on the market. |

Running the Rotella 15/40. Engine seems to have better pick-up. Would oil drag be that different from 20/50? Temperature is 60's Using a Fram 2870A '99 M2 |

The viscosity ratings are for "standard" conditions... conditions that don't actually match where our air cooled engines run. So the difference between 20w50 and 15w40 oils, at operating temperatures, can be a lot more then they appear. People told me I was nuts, and frankly, I think I might be nuts as well... but I believe I can tell the difference between running normal 20w50 and 15w50 Mobil 1 as soon as the bike starts up. I shouldn't be able to... but it sure seems like I can. If anyone wants to buy me oil and change it for me, I'll be happy to do a blind test |

So, do ya think the 15/40 is too thin? |

I used the Rotella 15/40 til yesterday. I went for about 150 miles and things sounded a "clackity-clack". It was a warm day. All I kept thinking about was "thin oil". Now I am trying Mobil 1 15-50 synthetic. Did 80 miles on it today. |

See! I have you thinking *you* can tell the difference also! |

I really think that there is a difference! The only thing I am trying to figure out now is a filter. I am using a FRAM HG2870A, I know that is not the popular choice. I bought several auto filters, can't seem to find one other than the FRAM that fits! What other filters could I use? '99 M2 I change oil every 3000. |

http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/index.asp says Wix 51215... http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/FilterXRef.ht ml ( which disagree's with Wixx's website ) eaom134 Amsoil from amsoils site. http://www.a1lubricants.com/ofrefer.html I use the Dyna filter. It's longer, but the same diameter as stock. Holds about an extra 1/2 quart. |

"Holds about an extra 1/2 quart." I don't think the entire filter holds a half quart. |

1/2 pint? I admit I've never measured. It's bigger.... I'm hoping it's more than bragging rights. |

LOL. I use it too. It's probably about a cup or less. |
