hello, my first post here.I'm looking into buying a 2008 Uly by next year but I haven't decided yet because of the issues the 06 and the 07 had. Have those issues been resolved? How much better is the one? Is it smoother? Does it still shake a lot? Is the FI better at lower RPM's? Thanks. | ||

2006 Issues??? The only issues I've had with my Uly is the two speeding tickets I've got with it! Other than that, I've put 16,000 miles on it with only having to replace the rear tire at 10,059 miles when I had the service done and I just had my rear brake pads replaced at 15,800 miles. I'm very happy with my 2006 Ulysses! It's NOT for sale, nor will I even consider trading it!!! Mine is a "KEEPER"!!! | ||

Angel: The Ulysses has generally been a very trouble free variant of the XB platform, the most reliable and trouble free member of the entire HD family. There were some issues, well documented, with both the 2006 and the 2007. None of these would slow me from snapping up either year. The 2008 model brought some, pretty much flowing from owner requests, neat changes including the turning radius, larger fork tubes, oiling system and heated grips. Be sure to take advantage of one of the unique opportunities Buell presents . . taking the bike for a proper demo ride. I'm betting you'll love it. Court | ||

08's have lower power stator. a fix over 06/07 that burn up from over heating/over powering its self. the rest of the changes are refinements, not really fixes. FYI I am looking for a used 06, all are still great machines. | ||

I would recommend the 08 if you are looking at the Uly. I have an 06. I've had some issues. All were covered under warranty. Most of the issues have been corrected with the 08. The biggest advantages of the 08 are the better oiling system and better timing system. These have helped to alleviate the largest issues with the bike, pinging and heat management. Some of the 06's and 07's had severe pinging problems. The timing seemed to be difficult to dial in to prevent the problem. I believe the new timing system helps to alleviate this problem. The secondary problem was heat management. Buells are air and oil cooled. The larger cooler and enhanced pumping capacity will help to provide more efficient cooling through the oiling system. Cooler engines should be less likely to ping. Cooler engines should also have the fan run less causing less noise and fan wear. The steering lock was never an issue for me, but it would be nice to have. The real benefit is with the updated fork suspension components. Hope this helps. Seems like someone mentioned that the 08 runs about 20 degrees hotter to meet new EPA emissions. The 08 fan shut off temp is 383 vs the 06-07 shut off temp of 356. Maybe the heat deflectors will redirect the heat. | ||

Al at American Sportbike did. I can't imagine those deflectors helping. I've got a set and now the underside of my right leg is on fire to go with the innerside against the frame. I'm trying the tinfoil ducting to direct the fan air out the bottom only and going back to my Odie's blankets. | ||

Buy and enjoy...it's the best motorcycle I've ever owned. When I bought my Uly, there were four bikes in my garage. Through the process of attrition, it's the only one that remains. If the Uly doesn't fit the bill for you, I'd consider the Multistrada to be #2... | ||

Love mine....only shakes at idle.....smooooth when rolling. Makes it fun at stoplights. Not a good bike to ride in traffic due to heat. Heats not an issue with ATGATT. If you like riding in shorts stay away....can't think of a bike Id rather have. The instant power band it a hoot. Handles great and love the bags. Having the owner of the company come to your part of the county just to BS with his customers is an unbelievable thrill. How many car or motorcycle companies in existence today can you actually say you can chat with the COO / designer for a bit (and listens to your ideas and really cares) Me and Erik  (Message edited by wesman on November 02, 2007) | ||

I am about ready to trade-in my ST1300 for an 08 Buell. I want to enjoy more the Colorado dirt roads. I have been spending a lot of time on the forum. I must admit I am a little concerned with the mechanical issues I have read about, a number of which may have been addressed in the 08 model. I have had 5 metric bikes over the years, and not one problem outside of normal wear (brake pads etc..) I am trying to assess what is the probability of getting a 08 Uly that will give me years of reliability? It has been great reading your posts. | ||

I'm another vote for the 08, my 06 Ulysses was bug ridden and stranded me several times. NOT OK. Now on my 5th Buell but that one tested my patience to the limit. Get the 08. I switched to an 08. Watch for the top clutch cable bracket on the engine mine broke in the first 100 miles and burned the clutch cable against the exhaust. | ||

Cpilot, I think the chances are excellent. Remember, the 06 Buell is a first year model. In that context, the few problems that 06's have paled in comparison to problems in first year offerings like, for example, the K1200R/S and even the Yamaha FJR1300. I've got an 07, and while I've only put 3000 miles on it, it runs with Japanese reliability...as did the S3T on which I put 25k miles before it. | ||

I've been waiting 4 months to see and test an 08 Uly, but none have yet made it this far west of East Troy WI (..500mi?!?). Meanwhile I've ridden an 07 a couple times and really like it except for the jumpy first gear that makes slow riding on/off road a bit of a drag. I'm interested to see if this has been corrected in 08. Any 08 owners here? In the meantime I plan to test a Kawa Versys this afternoon.. looks to be a 2/3 Uly in a watercooled jacket. | ||

I'm looking at how the '08's do, too. But I don't think I'd hesitate to get an '06-'07 if I ran into a killer deal.  My main concern with reliability is not getting stranded on a long trip, actually any trip, but when I take a ride to Utah or the Blue Ridge mountains, or whatever, braking down should not be part of the plan. Another concern was the engine, whether I would deal with the vibrations or if they would annoy me too much, so I got a good deal on an '06 Sportster with 285 miles. This way while I wait I can get a better feel on the day to day of the engine. I gotta say so far the engine is a hoot. The Harley twin is just a fun motor, period.  | ||

Cpilot, There is nothing like exploring the roads of Colorado (or anywhere else) on a Uly. My '06 has now provided over 16,000 miles of incredible enjoyment for me and my family. Knowing what I know now, I would make the same decision again! Unfortunately any forum can be like aviation safety; the thousands and thousands of safe flights tend to be over shadowed by the one accident. If every single ride/trip/experience on a Uly was posted daily, the positive experiences would dramatically dominate this site! So like aviation safety, keep what you read here in perspective. Buy a Uly and start experiencing the thrill and passion of life on a Buell! | ||

I too live in Colorado  and I love my Buells  Its a sport adventure bike, how do you think when I lose my belt on a group ride? I had to call a tow truck. THAT SUX  This trip left me with a dented rim and stranded me no where near cell phone towers  I was also stranded on this ride due to a clutch cable and I was stranded.  I'm only listing the failures that stranded me, and like an aircraft failure they were kind of serious! You might think so too if it was you left stranded with no easy way out of the fix. You must need to have it happen to you to understand how it makes you feel, then you would not take lightly. I'm on my 5th Buell now, but I would not give $2,000 for another 06 Ulysses after that experience (Message edited by brad1445 on November 03, 2007) | ||

Angel: I FINALLY bought an 08 Uly (in Blue) 2 weeks ago. I had found a used 06 demo and a leftover 07 locally but for the price difference and considering all of the major improvements in the 08 I decided in the end to go the extra $ for the 08. Definitely take a demo ride that is what sold me in the first minute. I love it...a super ride! I also ordered a tall windshield for the colder weather and the Barricade Orange (FASTER) parts.  ... but I must admit the Blue color is pretty cool too. Good luck! | ||

Can one of you buell experts help me? I seem to sometimes have problems starting my 06 Uly. This is on a normal Louisiana day. Does it have an auto choke? It sometimes sounds like a weak battery or out of time. It doesn't like cranking over, (makes me nervous every time I start it) ..thanks, James | ||
