I don't have a lot of miles on my SX yet but I am considering changing to a 46 tooth sprocket. I went to a 44 tooth very soon after my initial ride and was glad I did but now I am thinking I need to go a couple teeth higher. I took the long way in to work this morning and spent a little more time on some open road. I finally got it into 6th gear but at 60 mph, I don't know that it was necessary.
Is it just me not yet being used to the nature of this beast?
Any comments on the tractability of the bike with a 46 versus a 44? Don't even want to hear the comparisons with the original 41.

If you do make a change, stick with odd numbered sprockets for better wear and longevity. Check out these two links for your own insight as to speed, rpm, torque, etc:

It's not an even/odd deal. The ratio can not be an integer e.g. 15/45 = 3

I'm working on updating my old gearing calculator to include the 1190s.

I rode a bike with a 44 and fell in love with it, I personally felt it was perfect and fixed the issue of the too tall first gear without making 6th feel too short. I'd be curious to try a 46 tooth for a day to feel that difference.

I put mine back to the stock 41... The 44 pretty much made 1st gear useless without having to turn the traction control up to keep the front wheel planted.

Also, the idea of using a sprocket with a odd number of teeth must be correct because on the 44 you could see wear on every other tooth. The 41 looks uniform.

That just illustrates to me how different we all ride. I abhor lugging the motor and with the 41 and 44, I felt I was always on the verge of that. So far, I haven't had the TC on and I don't think the front wheel has been off of the ground. But it's still young.

It'll be interesting to see if the lower gearing affects the gas mileage. That excellent cruising gas mileage may be dependent on keeping the engine at the verge of lugging.

Man, how in the world are you not power wheeling through the first 3 gears with a 46 tooth sprocket?

Several points: The bike is new and I am trying to take it easy. Keeping it below 6K.
I don't have a solid reference of comparison to rate the performance of this bike. My previous ride was a Triumph Street Triple and it was a spirited bike. I could wheelie it in first and second with very little effort but one still had to work at it. I have never had the feeling of being near a wheelie on this bike.
Reading these comments, I am starting to wonder about the status of power being made by my bike. I can feel there is ample unleashed power available but coming off of a red light, I have to slip the clutch a bit to keep it from stumbling and have no fear of controlling a wheelie. Obviously, these are not WOT starts.
I am starting to wonder if I have a fueling problem of some sort.

Well that explains it, if your keeping it under 6K, and partial throttle... I don't know how many miles you have on it, but after the break in period, and you open it all the way up to 11,500 you better hang on lol

Also, as you turn down the TC it starts getting more and more interesting

Also the clutch is a vacuum assisted slipper. It really needs some love when you take off or it can bog out and die.

Give it some throttle til it reaches the grabbing point, then for shits and giggles give it a lot more, that front end won't stay down.
