JB2 and i finally hooked up in Fruita, Colorado, just west of Grand Junction, early Sunday afternoon. it was GREAT to finally see my friend again - the last time we rode together was exactly five years ago - and both of us were stoked about the adventures that lay ahead.

we stripped the VFR's and headed south, up into the Colorado Nat'l Monument. JB2 had ridden here before, with his Dad, but the CNM was a first for me, and i was blown away by the beauty and majesty - and the ROADS!!!

one could easily fill an entire memory card with pix just from the Monument. alas, this shot doesn't come close to putting you there.

this is better, but still falls well short of the real thing. the lighting, aided by a "Chamber of Commerce" cloud set, changed almost by the second, adding depth and character to a landscape that needs no assistance. this place is literally, simply, mesmerizing.

these four photos, taken in series, give just the teeniest of glimpses into the roads that make up the Monument.

JB2's Interceptor is equipped with a pair of undertail Staintune cans, which emit the coolest Formula One tunes on the boil, especially aided by God's own acoustic chamber.

well, since JB2 is at work right now and unable to defend himself...this was all HIS fault.

officer #1, pictured, cared not a whit for our riding style. things might not have been so bad, except that try as he might officer #1 was physically unable to actually catch up to us to express his official displeasure, which, um, made him mad.

radio waves, being generally faster than even the most exuberant sportbike riders, were employed, summoning officer #2, out of frame to the right, to set up a rolling road block.

it took several minutes for officer #1 to finally arrive on scene, giving him even more time to become, er, madder.

officer #2 was calm and cool, which turned out to be our salvation. he could see that we were both grayhairs, not particularly squid-like in appearance, and he liked the fact that we were courteous and oh-so-contrite.

officer #1, however, was another story entirely.

that's officer #2, standing, during several confabs he had with officer #1. this stop took FOREVER, as police computers were searched far and wide to determine the depth, breadth, and width of our previous criminal activities. i'm happy to report that our paperwork, every last bit of it, was in order.

during this time, officer #2 offered to take our photo in front of officer #1's unit. wow, i'm really starting to like this guy!

so he says, as he readies my camera, "Hey, you two can raise your hands in the air if you want!"

we laughed, but then i hesitated. "Hey, dude, since we're getting all silly here, does this mean you're letting us off?"

"Oh, no," says he, very matter of factly, "both of you ARE getting tickets."

"Well," says i, crestfallen, "suddenly I'm not feeling so jovial."

officer #2 marched right up to my face.

"Listen pal, here's the deal. My partner was, and still is, ready to write you guys for "reckless" driving. Trust me, it's a BIG fine, and worse yet, entails a MANDATORY court appearance back here in Colorado.

"But, I like your style, and I FINALLY calmed him down enough that he's only writing you for "careless" driving, which is a mere $50 fine, and, since it's a FEDERAL beef, it doesn't show on your driving record - no points, no traffic school, and your insurance company never needs to know.

"Now, smart guy, how ya feelin' now???" says officer #2, with a rather contented look that said "Game! Set!! Match!!!"

"Er, um, uhhh...", i stammered, "like, cool, I'm starting to feel all jovial again!"

"I THOUGHT so," he said, with a wry smile.

unfortunately, the batteries in my camera took a dump at that moment, and we never got the shot of me 'n JB2, hands held high, guilty as the day is long, federal criminals and all that, menaces to society and everything that is good and decent and moral.

bad boys, bad boys, what ARE you gonna do??? ; )

we retired to Fruita, and drank mas margaritas, and toasted the day. $50, for the pix and the memories? worth every peso, mi amigo!

and so it was that the games began. : )

That situation looks very familiar, down to the white police truck, the mountains and the serpentine road leading up into the national park ... in CO ; )

I would fight that ticket. Obviously not you. You were Riding, not Driving. LOL

Still had you been on a Buell, you probably would have gotten off with just a warning.

Ferris.....Thanks for the pictures!!! I really miss that area of the country. I used to live in Edwards, CO (just west of Vail). My best friend's brother lived in Grand Junction. We would ride and mountain bike the Fruita area a couple times per year. There are TONS of great roads all over the state.

Just one more reason to have another BadWeb rally in Colorado next summer!!!!!!!!

Ferris ... your planting dangerous seeds in my mind, I'm soooooo jealous of you. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us, and your thumb. So is careless driving lesser an offense than wreckless driving?

"peace and respect, then, to the memory of the rugged, determined pioneers who helped settle the West. "

Yeah, it's a good thing they didn't turn tail and run the first time the desert floor got a bit moist!

You know, what you need is a good dual-purpose bike!

Spudman - We should all strive to achieve wreckless driving. It's reckless driving that gets ya cited.

Dino,

My first ticket was for wreckless driving ... at age 14. I was doing a wheelie down the main drag. Cost me $300, alot of money back then.

Somehow I get the distinct feeling that Officer #2 could be as nice as he wants to be, and be a bad as he needs to be, whatever fits the situation at hand.

Spud,

Maybe I'm just cheap, but $300 is still a lot of money to me. BTW, as I understand it, the nice thing about being cited in a NP is that they just want your money. They don't share news of the violation with your friendly neighborhood DMV, who, therefore, doesn't share it with your insurance company...at least that's what I've heard. Anybody know any different?

Ah, I see FB has covered that issue in his better-late-than-never text.

thanks everyone. yeah, careless WAY better than reckless (but not as good as wreckless, heh, heh, heh...)

CJ, Denise LOVES her new scoot!

sorry for the late text - this is taking two computers to accomplish (three if you count the camera, four if you count the card reader), and a fair amount of time.

Dino, dual-purpose? hmmm, ya think??? ; )

PDX, nope, no radar, no pace, couldn't catch us for either. he was pissed that every time he got a slight line-of-sight on us we were farther away, and i was way too busy keeping JB2 behind me to notice we had heat on our tail. we dodged a good-sized Howitzer round on this one, for sure.

did i mention it was all JB2's fault?
