Finally got to talk to The Boy a couple hours ago. I'm now in Dupont, Washington, and he's given me a new, ahem, parts assignment for tomorrow.

Weird weather on the left coast. When I was renting a car in the Seattle airport, all the vendors were atwitter about a "big wind storm." Near as I can tell, it's like a hurricane, but without the rain. I drove for an hour and never felt a breeze. Perhaps I just managed to stay ahead of the storm.

Tomorrow I'm off to the far west coast of Washington and the Olympic Forest. yahoo!

Thanks again, everyone, for taking such good care of Jim. I know he appreciates it, and I want you to know I do, too.

Go Nance, GO!

Talked to The Boy this morning. The pic of the bike in snow is sorta wild. The bike has a nice white layer -- except over the one headlight. He's already 75 miles out of Salt Lake City.

Kristi - it's his glasses that he lost! Fortunately, he can see "pretty well" without them. Turns out there's a Lenscrafters in Boise, Idaho (on today's route.) I've been in touch with the Raleigh store where he got his last pair and they assure me it will be easy for him to get a replacement pair in Boise and it should go pretty fast.

DBird, sounds like he had a great time with you. He's exhilarated and talking about driving straight through to Seattle tonight. I'm pushing him to take it slow - better safe than sorry. On the other hand, it sure would be nice to hug him.

And he is off!

The part did not get replaced but the current situation looks stable.

Kristi, don't ship me the part!

Good luck Jim it was fun.

Too late...shipped out yesterday. Oh well, it's all good. Thanks for taking care of Jim. He's a good guy to know.

RAM - he told me about the glasses. I'm glad he could see well enough to get to Dbrid's house. Good thing he'll be able to get another pair today. I'd be up the creek without mine.

It's funny.
People at work are listening to this story and all they can ask is "you let a stranger stay at your house?".
I don't think they get it and have much less fun in their lives.

Way to go Jim! : D

Thanks all especially Jim and RAM for sharing the adventure in near real time.

This just sorta occurred to me . . .

Earlier this year Jim posted in the C3 section that the weather forecast looked good so he was going to take the following day off of work. Two days later he posted about his ~750 mile "day trip" to Deal's Gap and back.

A month or so ago he said something about riding to the Inside Pass event to spectate. On the morning of the event he showed up in the paddock at VIR and signed up to partake in his first track day.

Not long ago I remember Jim posting something about his girlfriend going out West and how he thought it would be cool to ride out there and meet her. Now he's somewhere on the other side of Utah.

When I look at those three events collectively, I find myself drawn to one of two conclusions:

1. Jim is nuts, and the Ulysses is his bike of choice.

2. The Ulysses is nuts, and Jim is its rider of choice.

Spike - don't let Sarah read this thread or your chances of a Uly might be squashed!

If you're gonna do a trip like this, the Uly is a perfect bike to do it on and especially with the resources and offers from so many great BadWeBrs.

Spike- I think it might actually be a bit of both, you know the Buells always beg for more!

Rubberdown and myself comment on how not just a short time ago this stranger on a Blast showed up on the board. Went and did a trip to upstate New York I believe and came home with an M2. He was quite shy way back then. Now he is my hero! Can't wait to have lunch and talk about it!

I've got one problem with this whole trip of his. He called it sort of a mid-life crisis. This trip is nothing like any midlife crisis I've ever read about.

He can see! He can see! Jim finally got new glasses and is headed back up the road. He wants to at least cross into Oregon to make tomorrow's ride easier.

I've been riding along the Washington coast all day. It was a bad day to be without cell service for 4 hours, but the views . . . AMAZING. There are some twisties out here that you guys would love. It reminded me a bit of Suches, except one side of the road was steep mountains covered in gihugicamal trees, and the other side was the roaring Pacific Ocean. It's waaaaay more active than the Atlantic.

BadWeb is an amazing place to meet some great people. Rock on with yer bad selves.

Badweb was down this morning. I posted this on ADV:

That didn't accumulate from being parked (note the low beam has no snow.) It sucked bad, but it makes a great story. It was all good until I got close to the Utah line. Then the snow started. I was worried someone would decide to close the interstate so I kept pushing on. It really wasn't bad to drive in. Then about 30 miles out of Salt Lake a blizzard happened. It was comming down so fast that when I'd wipe my visor off it was alreay covered with snow by the time my hand got to the other side. Then my glasses fogged. So I opened my visor to clear the glasses and the snow came in and froze to them. Then my fuel light came on and I was worried about finding gas, it's not so easy to find it out here. I pulled off at an exit and at the top I didn't see any gas. I called dbird and he was like "It looks like you missed the snow." I looked at the quarter inch that had accumulated on the bike seat since I got off, and said "ah, no, I'm in a blizzard." He offered to come get me in the truck, but it would take him an hour to get there. He told me there was gas at the next exit, so I decided to try for that. I took off my glasses since they were useless. About 2 miles down the interstate the snow stopped. I found gas and filled up the bike. I called David again and we worked out a plan. There was one pass between me and SLC that was snowing. He routed me through Provo. There was a guy next to me filling up his truck and he was a rider too. I talked to him and ended up following him part of the way to Provo. The provo canyon road (189?) was the best part of my trip. It was awsome. Even after discovering that I had lost my glasses, I was in a great mood riding down that road. It was beautiful. I made it into Draper after the sun went down. It interesting riding w/o glasses. I can see ok but can't read the traffic signs. David met me at a gas station and lead me to his house. I got to take a shower! It felt wonderful. David and Lori took me out to dinner. It was fantastic. Then an early bedtime.

Well here I sit in a coffee shop in Bosie, waiting on a new pair of glasses. It gives me a chance to catch up.

Yesterday was a great day. I met Rory and Becky in Wyoming and then David and Lori in Draper. Quality people. A lot of the fun of a ride like this is stopping to meet people, and yesterday was excellent in that regard. It makes it well worth dealing with a snow storm and a new pair of glasses.

Here is the Wyoming crew:

and the state they live in:

No pictures yet from today. They are still on the camera.

I woke up this morning and Lori fixed us a nice breakfast and dried my clothes. I hadn't seen much of Utah yesterday because of the weather. When I got on the highway this morning I looked around and thought it might actually be the most beautiful place on earth.

I ran up the road and had lunch with Motokat and Rubberdown (the one on ADV.) That was cool. I was stunned when I saw the snake river canyon (of Evil Kenivil fame.) Lunch was fun, more quality people.

I hope to make Oregon tonight. It's only 40 miles up the road so it should be doable.
