Next morning I left Yarmouth into Ophilia's deluge and just beat feet for Digby and the ferry across the Bay of Fundy to St. John, New Brunswick.

Digby-St. John ferry

ferry painter cleat

Boarding the ferry I met a pair of brothers who were enjoying the last few days of a bike trip before returning to Philadelphia. These guys were British, with one living in Philly (left) and other back home in Old Blighty. They enjoy a tradition of getting together every other year to take a bike trip somewhere in North America. Good on them!

The British brother fascinated me with anecdotes of his vintage auto racing hobby back in England. Seems he competes with a 30's vintage Chrysler in hillcimb events. Hillclimbs in Britain aren't what they are in North America. In the UK a hillclimb is a fascinating time trial typically along a road which rises up from a town's harbour to the plateau beyond.

Think: Pike's Peak - with better english and high tea. : D

(near where I'm from)Scarborough's race is famous among hillclimb enthusiasts, featuring cars and bikes and a serpentine climb from the shores of the North Sea up to the Yorkshire moores. He'd been in Scarborough competing just a few week's previous. It was a highlight of the trip to talk with this guy up in the ship's lounge. Seems their father had operated a Chrysler dealership in the UK back in the 30's and that's what fostered his connection to his odd choice of racing iron. He'd machined and fabricated many of the performance mods himself and was a wealth of information. The ferry docked in St. John too soon and it was with sadness I left my new friends for the road to Fredrickton.

"..(near where I'm from)Scarborough's race..."

You're from Scarborough! I got to watch the motorcycle races on the Scarborough sands in about 1974 or so. I was in the U.S. Navy then and had two weeks temporary duty at what was locally called "the old airfield" a few miles site outside of town.

Man did I enjoy that visit. One day in London on the way out but nothing beats getting out of the city and into the country. And the further North you go the better it gets.

Thanks guys, glad you like the views.

Jack, I'm from Brough which is a little south of Scarborough, near Hull where Rocket lives.

Charlie had an *interesting* experience while crossing the Bay of Fundy a few weeks after I left.... Seems he was making his way east in a gale and around 02:00 as he passed through the narrows of Digby Neck he was hit by four tall rollers that pitched the boat violently and broke open a patched area in the bow. He was taking on water faster than his bilge could drain it. He was sinking... in the middle of the night.... in a gale.

Thankfully the Canadian Coast Guard heard his distress call and sent a ship which met him and passed over a large volume bilge pump that was able to keep up with the flow from the break.

He made it into port under his own steam.

Cool...and with a GBCB shirts no less. I'm still partial to the photo of the pallets, you have an amazing eye.

Scratch sending the software, I ante'd up for the full version of Nikon Capture. I'm new to this RAW thing and need to start learning it.

What sort of a lens are you shooting the macro shots with? I've learned, from my trip to Daytona, that there is no substitute for "good glass".

Keep'em coming. . I've got a fantasy of Henrik and I riding our Ulyssi up to take a look see!

Lornce, great stuff you're posting.

This marvelously detail picture was taken on a Sony Ericsson 750i 2 mega pixel camera phone.

Oh yeah - just got Photoshop CS2 and need to get their RAW converter downloaded.

I'd be up for a long trip north on a Uly. That'd be cool.

You guys are riding Ully's now? How do you like them?

I'm hoping to *maybe* take the month of July and travel to British Columbia but I *could* start the trip with a quick run to James Bay if you guys were interested?

Henrik, that reminds me, I need to fire those RAW files to you.

No macro shots on this thread, Court, but my close-up flower shots etc. were taken with the standard Nikon issue Nikkor 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G ED lens. Cherise's macro views were taken with some sort of point and shoot with a macro feature. Can't remember what sort it was, but I'll ask her. The results are pretty amazing for a $300 camera.

I've got a few pics here that I took last summer using the macro feature of a Sigma 70-300mmD 1:4.5-5.6 APO DG macro similar to the one I bought in December. The first features blooms about the size of your finger nail.

Rocket, I'm waiting to hear back from my cousin, but I think those are the cooling towers I saw from Willerby. Glenn thought they were a BP refinery in Saltend when I asked him about them. We'll see what he says after he sees the picture.

No Uly - just wishful thinking : ) I'm actually having to sell of my XB9R to make room in both garage and budget for other pressing projects.

However, if one could scrounge up a loaner Uly for a little road trip ...

I'd like to play around with those RAW files. I've never shot or worked with RAW, but may at some time upgrade the work camera to a RAW capable one.

Temporary condition.

I have a list of about 5 folks who are "in the tractor beam".

Tis but a matter of time.

The lure of this bike is too strong for some folks.

Most excellent. I shot that pic whilst driving past Saltend at 50mph. I knew what it was of course, and I thought it looked great in a silly fashion, but for anyone else to spot the place..........phew.

When I get sorted with a new camera I'll get you some more local shots up.

Pictures from around Hull would be interesting to see. Hook up with my cousin if you're able. Maybe the two of you could have a mad ride together and post some pics here? It'd be cool to see pics of you and Glenn on this thread.

Thanks lads, glad you like the views.

Those S2 pictures were taken near Brampton on a gorgeous morning last October. The ride to Bala that day was pretty schweet, too. Say "Southwood Rd. #13". : D

I can't help thinking if Barrie Buell gave demo rides on that road, they wouldn't have 3 year old bikes sitting on their showroom floor...

Could you imagine if Southern Ontario's gixxer-jockeys had a chance to sample XB's in their element? Most of them would throw stones at their rev-zingers when they got back.... ;)

This man clearly needs a Buell to increase his riding confidence.

I need a Buell

I can definitely attest to that! I've only had Gallactica on Southwood13, and I must say with poor results! That road begs for torque @ planet earth RPMs, and it aints happenin' on an IL4! We need to gather the SOBs for a Buell only run up the most beautiful road in Ontario, and then a nice relaxing lunch at Bee Jays...

Ahhh summer, what a concept!

Oi, Rocket,

Have you heard of this British photographer: Michael Kenna? A friend just put me onto him.

Ratcliffe Power Station Cooling Towers

He's done an entire series of photographs of Ratcliffe Power Station's cooling towers over a 20-odd year period. Your fleeting view of Saltend's refinery made me wonder....
