So there I am relaxing at home reading American Iron Magazine which has been fairly Buell friendly and somewhat reliable for decent information. The March 2005 issue has a article on exhausts which was pretty interesting till I got to this line.

"Check out the exhausts used on some model Buells; they are all function and power producing. They may also be hidden under the bike for aesthetic reasons."

Without having read the article, I would hazard a guess that Mr. Peterson made the comment in the context of Harleys having to give up best engineering of exhausts in order to satisfy aesthetics. The Moco could make a better performing Sportster or Big twin right of the showroom floor if they hung a large volume but butt-ugly muffler like the Yamaha Road Warrior's.
I like my Vance&Hines but most of the Harley types want something that looks as much like straight-pipes as possible. And if you're going to market that, you have to give up power-producing (and noise producing) valve overlap. Buell's, with the muffler out of sight, don't have to sacrifice power for aethetics, he says.
I'm sure Donny Peterson is well aware of Buell's design philosophy. After Kevin Cameron and Aaron Wilson, he is one of the best technical writers I've read.

Maybe so, it just drives me crazy when paid experts make statements like that. I like reading American Iron Magazine, but if you are going to reference something, you should know what you are talking about.

I have had a subscritption for one year and they ran 1 Buell bike spread on a 1996 S2 that had nothing more then some polishing and a paint job. I have seen bikes 10 times more interesting posted on this website, I would hope someone would take notice.

Oh well...

In all fairness it was a good article, it just the little things that drive me crazy sometimes. Donny if you are reading this, I am not trying to pick on you, just trying to promote why things are like they are...

Also there was a 1/4 page for Team NRHS at Bonneville that was neat to see. Congrats Timbo
