I've heard that the police on the Crest can be sticklers to the letter of the law, meaning if they catch you 1 mile over the limit or with an unapproved exhaust or with non-DOT approved license plate mountings or turn signals, it's ticket time.

This is true. A couple of months ago a friend was pulled over (last guy in a 4 man supermoto train) and the C.H.P. (motorcop) gave him a ticket for the Akrapovic slipons' his KTM.

That doesn't sound much like fun unless your bike is completely stock and you drive like an old man. So I've got no worries there. Ha ha.

How dare you have fun without all the latest shiny rattles.
I saw a C.H.P. motor and suv out there yesterday. Saw the motor 2 times, both times were well below Newcombs. On the way down the suv cop pulled on to a plateau, just before the first gate (up), to watch up hill traffic.
After Newcombs I saw no law enforcement.

Timoc Posted on Friday, May 22, 2009 - 11:40 pm:

I didn’t see any type of law enforcement this morning. Matter of fact, on the way up to Newcomb's from Wrightwood, only saw 2 other vehicles, 1 was a forest rangers truck. Weekdays seem to work good for me. Nice and quite up/at and back.

While at Newcombs, if you were looking, the Orange Ulysses that was going east
was me. I slowed to scan the lot, but didn't see any Buells, so continued on.

I saw you! I was already on the way back towards wrightwood. I slowed, but you were in the zone.

Was that you heading (east) back towards Wrightwood, near the ski area?

I really dislike doing "out and back" rides. So, I made a loop of the ride, going down the back side of the mountain through Valley Yermo. Then back up Angeles Forrest highway.
I saw that C.H.P. motor (second time), about 3 miles east of the crest and forrest highway junction.

...Just ask Ferris.

Sparky, thanks for bringing back some great memories. : )

We're enjoying getting to know the East Coast's version of the Sierra Nevadas, i.e. the Appalachians. There is SO much great riding out here. Wednesday I ran up to NE Indiana on the Road King, then back here to Virginia on Thursday, then Friday morning Denise and I headed down the Parkway two-up to Franklin, North Carolina for JB2's annual "Big Jim's Ride."

We opted to avoid Deal's Gap and the Cherohala Skyway yesterday - woulda been much too crowded for our tastes - but one of the gems we rode is called Wayah Bald, and it's a real twist fest.

I always enjoyed riding the Crest when we were still in Cali, and me 'n D even took Alex Prior over it several years ago on the first day of his "Ride Across North America." It's an amazing road, and I'm betting the locals are thrilled that it's open all the way thru again.

Sparky, you and Jen need to come visit us - we've got some roads to show you.

Jerry,
Is there a Wayah road also?

I went on a "short breakfast ride" with Raceboy, V2win and a bunch of others that started at DMG 'resort" went towards Fontana and then ended up on what I thought was Wayah Rd. The road was a twist fest as you indicated and IIRC we went uphill for 1/2 the distance and downhill for the other half.

Needless to say that short breakfast run ended up being 250 miles of twisties. I thought my arms were going to fall off (I was fresh off a 1000 mile day). That was one hell of a ride

Hi Matt : )

Seems fitting that you should put quotation marks around "short breakfast ride" with Racerboy - after having ridden around the country with him for several days during the "Out of Words" ride, I learned that he doesn't know the meaning of only taking a "short" (or slow!) ride. : D

Not sure if there's a Wayah Road in addition to Wayah Bald Road. I'll point JB2 to this thread when he gets back from the weekend (they spent last night in Kentucky at Hillbilly Ed's place, drinking moonshine and setting off hand grenades (true, and true...), and should be arriving back in Indiana tonight.

I road Wayah Bald for the first time in '99, when me and Fireman Jim rode out from Cali for the original BRATPAC Ride, and this is the first time I've ridden it in the intervening decade. Even tho it was a holiday weekend, there was very little traffic, and most of the pavement was smooth and clean (and tight).

We did have a pucker moment when the lead three bikes came ripping around a bend and there was a car backing up in our lane. They had missed their turn by about 50 yards and decided it would be easiest simply to toss it into reverse instead of turning around somewhere a bit safer.

What a maroon, as FMJ would say. : )

Jerry,
Short is in racerboy's vocabulary, his scale is just different : )

I also met Ed (Hillbilly) on the ride with Bob (Racerboy) and John (V2win). Ed sold me a tailbag, which I though felt kinda heavy when he gave it to me. Turns out he left a pistol and some ammo in the bag.

I'm sure it'd be a hoot to party with him on his own turf.

Ain't it the truth! : )

Here's one of my favorite Racerboy stories:

PS: Hillbilly Ed was with us in Franklin this weekend, and it turns out he's a hoot to party with on someone else's turf, too. ; )

Wow - you guys are bringing back memories!
I went to Murphy High School - 9th grade '66-'67 and I remember the roads around there.
I would get totally car sick riding in the back of dad's Ford. Turned dark green - puked everything out but the sneakers I was wearing. Twisty sumbitches!

Which means the roads that happened on are PERFECT motorcycle roads!

Gotta get back there on 2 wheels, someday!

Al, D's last name is Murphy, and we saw several street signs this weekend that literally had her name on them. : )

Here's a look at last year's "Big Jim's Ride," in case you missed it - I bet this brings back a lot of memories for you:

Give a holler if you ever find yourself pointed this way; we'd love to go riding with you. : )

Wayah Bald Road and Wayah Road are one in the same. The locals call it Wayball Road for good reason! : )
