Hey folks- my beloved sister is graduating from her doctoral program at Asbury College in Wilmore KY, just below Lexington next Saturday- I'm looking for accommodations for Friday/Saturday/Sunday.

I will be bringing my GF, my old Shovelhead, and if I can find the right digs, I'd like to bring my 16YO Basenji and the GF's mutt. (Both are well-behaved canines- mine mostly sleeps at his age.)

Anyone know of dog-friendly motels close-by? Better yet, anyone willing/able to put us up? (I'm a little paranoid about where I'll keep the old Shovel- would LOVE 100% secure storage if available.) The GF is worried about leaving the pooches behind, even with a pet sitter, to the point where she'd rather not go just to stay home with the dogs.

So- any ideas/suggestions? Thanks in advance for youn's input.

If you leave the dogs behind one of the most interesting places in Kentucky is Shakertown near Harrodsburg. Terrific food, accommodations, and a fascinating place to tour. It is an original and totally restored community where the Shakers lived. They were self sufficient in everything but cotton (too far north) including their own silk production.

Have you checked the Storm Fronts tab or the BRAN? There is so much to do in the area you're going to be in I couldn't even begin to tell you where to go/what to do. Check the net if you haven't already for pet friendly hotels. What area are you wanting to stay in? I'd be more than glad to help out with "safer" places to stay and some points of interest. I'll be out of town that weekend or I'd hook up with a ride.

Hey Rocket- my sis and many of her friends have made reservations at the Holiday Inn Express in Nicholasville KY. She is graduating from Asbury Methodist College in Wilmore KY.

I will be calling them tomorrow to determine whether they will shack us up, or if I'll need to look elsewhere.

Won't have the Buell- plan on having my old Shovel with a new motor. First break-in miles will include a good bit of KY it seems...

Itinerary (in progress): Leave Mur-vil Friday afternoon, drive to KY in my truck with the GF, 2 dogs, luggage, and the Shovelhead. Find/secure lodging. Take a short ride in the early evening with time.

Saturday, graduation for my dear Sis, Dr. Candace Kay Hardin, Doctor of Ministry.

Sunday, mebbe some good daytime riding before heading back to Mur-vil.

Heck- this is gonna be a busy weekend, but a very good one.

I have stayed at the Homewood suites at 249 Ruccio way in Lexington Kentucky, There is another Homewood suites right next to the Man'O War HD dealer a little further out. They have free dinners with Kentucky ale on tap and free hot breakfasts, the one near the HD dealer does not have the free beer, but everything else. It is a little expensive but free meals and a really nice place to stay. K

Thanks Babs- got a motel reso at the Econolodge in Nicholasville. They allow dawgies for $10 per pet per night, so that's what I'm working with.

Decided it's not worth taking the bike given the itinerary, although I'd love to do some riding up there.

What about horsies? My GF used to be a warm-up jockey in Florida way back before she had kids, so we may head to a thoroughbred farm early Sunday before we head back.

What's close by, or what's not to be missed given the chance?

Thanks again youn's for the help and info.

I don't know if there is any horseback riding there but it is a place to visit. Last time I was there the Kentucky Derby was going on, it was cool. I've traveled to Rabbit Hatch northern Kentucky, suggested by some Kentucky Bad Web guys, its an old general store and biker hang out.
Whiskey distillery tours are another big item down there, along with the locks. S&G locks were created in Lexington the factory is there.
Alot of Abraham Lincohn history is there too. I visited 2 of his boyhood homes when I was in school. And then went to a pretty cool drag racing strip called the Bluegrass Raceway to see the locals burn it up for a day. The drag strip was surrounded by mountains. The Shaker site is cool too. They were the ones who created the vegetable seed packets we buy for our gardens. They created the market for seeds. K

Muchas Gracias, amigos.

I'm gonna try top check out the Shaker site- it's real interesting that they developed a gardening seed business and were/are self-sustaining.

Someone else also mentioned the horse park. That's probably a must-see...

Have a memorable Memorial day weekend, be well, grill out, peace out, be safe and content....

Remember.

Hey youn's- just got back yesterday from the trip to Wilmore. Had a GREAT weekend, after arriving late for dinner on Friday (I have a bad habit of thinking I can make time on secondaries instead of the interstate.)

At the dinner, the president of Asbury seminary announced the Distinguished Thesis award for the class of 2009. A German woman receiving her doctorate won the award- afterward, my sister's mentoring professor said that he and several others on the mentoring board had nominated my sister, so essentially she was runner-up for the award.

Sis's mentor said that of all the theses he had reviewed over the years, Kay's was the best he had ever read. Then his wife, standing beside him said "It's true- he kept saying how good it was over and over."

Yeppers- I'm pretty proud of my Sis. She has earned her Doctorate of Ministry. Her dissertation project was titled "Spiritual Formation for Southern Baptist Clergy". Doing this as a Baptist chaplain in a Methodist doctoral program is even more remarkable.

Thanks again for the advice on the area- although I didn't have time to explore the area, I hope to do so sometime in the future.

On a different note- I got to stop in London KY to take a look around the new HD dealership my old boss is building, Wildcat Harley-Davidson. New building from the ground up. Absolutely beautiful inside, very well planned out and organized, looks like an art gallery in many ways. They plan to do the soft opening next Monday. (Hate to say it, but no Buells there- yet- but damn it'll be a fine dealership otherwise!)

Very well worth a look if you're passing thru...

Also- Happy Memorial Day! Let's remember and honor our servicemen/women, and our veterans.
